Bayelsa to Host Major Marathon Event Commemorating Nigeria’s First Oil Well
The Nengi James Foundation is set to host a 22km marathon in Bayelsa State on April 6th, 2025. In a unique blend of sports and community engagement.
 The event, which coincides with the United Nations International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, aims to promote community spirit, physical activity, and awareness about the importance of peace and development in the region.
The marathon which is set to take place on Sunday the 6th  of April 2025 will traverse through several host communities, including Otuabagi, Otuogidi, Opume, and Oloibiri, where Nigeria’s first oil well was discovered.

The event in a statement by the Chief Nengi James   aims to bring together individuals and groups to celebrate the momentous occasion and promote community engagement, physical activity, and awareness about the importance of peace and development in the region.
“The event is expected to foster community spirit, promote healthy living, and raise awareness about the importance of peace and development in the region”. Said Chief Nengi James
“By hosting this marathon, NEJAF seeks to align with the United Nations’ theme of promoting sport for development and peace”. 
He added that the event is expected to bring together individuals and groups to celebrate this momentous occasion and promote community engagement, physical activity, and awareness about the importance of peace and development in the region.
All individuals and groups are invited to participate in the marathon, which will start at the iconic Christmas Tree Site.
