0

Nigerian government has unveiled the distribution of tractors to farmers in Kaduna State as part of strategies to enhance mechanized agriculture and boost food security.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohammad Abubakar stated this at the inauguration of the distribution exercise under the FG’s Agricultural Tractorisation Programme on Saturday in Kaduna.

He said, that agriculture being the key sector driving the economy, hence the need for it to be reinvigorated through tractor acquisition to achieve food security.

The minister said tractors would lead to improved quantity and quality of food per person as well as reduce drudgery of farmers in the country.

“Increasing productivity through tractorisation is fundamental to food security as we have seen in countries like China.

“Farmers are expected to make 40 per cent down payment while the balance of 60 per cent will be spread over a period of three years,” he said.

He reiterated government commitment to provide dividend of democracy through provision of enabling environment to the citizens.

The Managing Director, Bank of Agriculture (BOA), Alwan Hassan said farmers relied on manual labour, hence they could not increase food production levels in the country.

He said, the programme has been designed to enhance farmer access to tractors and implements, to encourage mechanised agriculture in the country.

According to him, tractors would be released to the Manage Service Providers on loans, while farmers could access them under a hiring scheme, to increase productivity, stabilise prices and food security in the country.

Earlier, Ernest Umakhihe, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, said the programme would move agriculture from subsistence to commercial venture.

“Agricultural mechanisation will improve yields, address nutrition issues and food security.”

On his part, Iliyasu Muazu, Chairman, Maize Famers Association of Nigeria, Kaduna State Chapter, commended the gesture, adding that it would assist farmers who could not afford tractors.

He, however, called for more support to the Manage Service Providers to ensure that farmers benefit from the programme across the 774 local government areas.

The Chairman urged farmers to take advantage of the subsidised tractors to improve their productivity.

Guardiola Says Haaland Can Improve By Watching Harry Kane

0

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said striker Erling Haaland can improve by watching and learning from his Tottenham Hotspur counterpart Harry Kane, ahead of their mammoth Premier League clash on Sunday, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.

Haaland took his tally in the Premier League to 25 goals in 19 appearances as he scored a hat-trick in Manchester City’s 3-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend. But Guardiola said the Norwegian international can develop his all-round game by studying players like Kane.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane (L), Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola (C) and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland (R).

“With Erling, one of the attributes that surprised me the most is how he is aware he can improve in many departments,” Guardiola said.

“And I’m pretty sure maybe watching Harry Kane, but not necessarily Harry, other players too, he has the will to think, ‘I can do better.’ With his age, this is the best thing he can believe. Otherwise, it would be boring.”

Kane, who has 16 league goals, scored the winner in Tottenham’s 1-0 win at Fulham two weeks ago to draw level with the late Jimmy Greaves on 266 goals for the club.

“Harry Kane remains one of the best strikers I have ever seen in my life,” Guardiola added. “What an exceptional player – the numbers and, more than the goals, the quality.

“That they didn’t win a title (does not mean) he is not a good player. I think he proved that.”

Manchester City came from two goals down to beat Spurs 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium last month. They are second in the league standings with 45 points, five behind leaders Arsenal, who lost 1-0 away at Everton to keep the title race open.

Tottenham Hotspur are fifth on the Premier League with 36 points and would be seeking an upset to keep their hopes for a top 4 finish alive.

Even logistics, tools to work with, the machines that will make us move round and ensure that the hoodlums do not hijack the policy. For example, the IG has sent vehicles to all commands and more are coming. We are sure more of these vehicles are coming. The IG has tried in that aspect. We have so many equipment, materials that we have gotten, and more are still coming, we are sure of it. So, we are adequately prepared,” said Mr. Olokode.

He charged the Police in the zone to pay more attention to specific issues in the zone, such as the transportation of ballots forms from the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to Local Government Areas, LGA and polling units.

INEC premises must be fortified before, during, and after elections. Ensure public order during voting at polling Stations be protective and make sure elections are violent free. By this lecture, the desire to conduct free, fair, credible and non violent exercise will be achieved. This is to guarantee conducive environment for citizens to freely exercise their electorate franchise assured members of the public especially politic1ans, of police neutrality as well as level-playing ground for all,” said Mr. Olokode.

The commissioners of police of both Bauchi and Gombe have been informed of what is likely to happen in such places. Because there is no doubt that, that point will draw the attention of so many. But that shouldn’t be any serious thing to contend with now, because we are aware of what will likely happen and we are also prepared to ensure the safety of the people around there, as well as the machineries on ground,” said Mr. Olokode.

Addressing the officers of the Gombe State Police Command, the AIG Zone 12, admonished them to treat members of their communities with courtesy and civility, because the Police were assigned to serve the people.

There may be one or two problems here and there, but they should handle it with utmost care. They should show compassion to people. If there are cases that are not too serious, they should advise the person and set them to go. Not all cases should be taken to court or you detain so many people. We should be very friendly to the people and that is what I meant by “You should police with human face,” said Mr. Olokode.

He, however, said they should work in synergy with other sister agencies, especially during the election period, because the police alone cannot achieve the desired peace and security.

Mr. Olokode said the responsibility of the police in a democratic society transcended the traditional roles they play, hence the expectations were on them to ensure a stable democracy; Conducive to the good governance, creating an enabling environment for economic development.

And providing acceptable basic Service delivery for the people of our zone, who are bound to be involved by way of community policing,” said the Zone 12 AIG.

He promised to build on positive aspects which were firmly entrenched in areas where giant strides were expected.

Mr. Etim said the police, in collaboration with other security agencies ies had continued to engage political parties in the state to be guided by section 92, sub section 1, 2, 3 and sub section 4of the 2022 Electoral Act.

That is why so far, Sir, we have not heard of any violent clash between any party in the State,” CP Etim said.

He, however, requested that the AIG Zone 12 should use his position to post senior officers in the ranks of Chief Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police to the command to fill up vacant positions as sectional heads in the State Criminal Investigation Department.

He said the need was due to manpower deficit, which had made more senior officers to hold forth as sectional heads.
