Hardship Caused By PDP, APC – Adelabu

0

Accord party governorship candidate in Oyo State, Adebayo Adelabu, has blamed the continuous hardship that Nigerians have faced in the last few weeks squarely on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in the aftermath of the violence that erupted in some parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday, Adelabu urged the people to maintain peace, saying that the current hardship has an expiry date of March 11, 2023, when the governorship election takes place.

While charging the people of Oyo State to eschew what he called ‘evil’, as epitomised by the two parties – PDP and APC, the Accord governorship candidate noted that it is clear that the two parties represent hardship and suffering, saying Oyo State had not had it so bad since the PDP administration took over governance.

He said: “The state capital, Ibadan is now returning to the old appellation of a dirty city. We had thought that with the solid waste disposal plan that the present administration met on ground, they would continue with it, unfortunately, this has not been the case. The road median has become a dumping ground for refuse. We pray that this does not result in cholera.”

Fuel/ New Naira Notes Crises: Governor Makinde Suspends Campaign Activities

A statement from the Bayo Adelabu Campaign Organisation (BACO) stated that the Seyi Makinde-led administration had shown that it is bereft of ideas and had continued to resort to copying the ideas of the Accord governorship candidate.

BACO recalled that the idea of street lights for the state and CCTV in strategic areas of the state, conceptualised by Adelabu when he was Chairman of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund had been appropriated by the Makinde administration.

Because the idea was not original to the PDP government, it was poorly executed, with the use of diesel to power the street lights, thus calling into question the engineering qualification of the governor. Any wonder that most of the streets remain in darkness due to the inability to power the street lights.

“In another of the ‘copy copy’ that has characterised the administration, Chief Adelabu suspended his campaign in empathy with the hardship that the people are facing over the new naira scarcity and the frustration occasioned by the high cost of fuel, Governor Makinde was quick to follow suit,” the statement revealed.

BACO asserted that as much as it was not against thinking for the Seyi Makinde administration, Oyo State cannot go through another four years of the administration.

Accord party is the best option

Similarly, BACO noted that the APC was not an option for the people of Oyo State as an APC administration would return the state to the era of brigandage, arson and insecurity.

The organisation urged the people of Oyo State to reject the two parties who had become an albatross on their neck, asserting that Accord is the only party that could take the people to the promised land as Adelabu had shown in his actions that he had the love of the people at heart.

His businesses have employed more than 3000 people in the state and he has never owed staff salary. He did this when he was not even thinking about contesting for any elective position, he will definitely do more as Governor. He has clearly shown his love for the people. The same cannot be said of the candidate of the APC or even Governor Makinde,” BACO said in the statement.

Mrs Nonye Soludo

She also stated that the theme for the year beckons on people with genuine interests to build stronger synergy and create smarter innovations that would give the fight against all types of cancer a more productive outlook.

Mrs Soludo further explained that with the ongoing free cervical cancer screening and treatment initiated by the Anambra state government for women and girls residing in the state, the current administration has shown that it is committed to enacting the right policies that would not only clamp down on the disease but also save the lives of those living in the state.

While repeating her earlier calls for women and girls to get actively involved in the ongoing exercise, Mrs Soludo reiterated that timely screening helps one to know their status, thereby making cancer treatment easier and more effective.

Nigeria Collaborates With Japan On North East Recovery

The Nigerian Government is collaborating with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, JICA, in developing rural communities in the North East region of Nigeria.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Nasir Sani-Gwarzo said development of rural communities and Local Governments is critical to the recovery of the North East region.

Sani-Gwarzo stated this at a sensitisation workshop on Community building through collaboration with Local Government in the North East region organised by the North East Development Commission in collaboration with the Japanese International Co-operation Agency, JICA.

Sani-Gwarzo who was represented by the Director, Humanitarian in the Ministry, Alhaji Grema said there has never been a better time to take stock and do appraisal than this.

” Please note that the role of the Federal Ministry if Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development as ND that of the North East Development Commission is to draw fare focused policies and programmes that are unbiased, prudent, humane and leaves no one behind in tandem with the Humanitarian, Development and Peace, HDP, triple nexus.

” However, the effort of both these Federal Government organisations can only make meaningful impact if the States and Local Governments complement our efforts by keying to the HDP triple nexus. The HDP triple nexus will accelerate the building of trust between governments at all levels and the local communities,” he said.

Region Reconstruction

The Permanent Secretary, however, noted that the reconstruction of the region will be faster and better if NGOs, INGOs and other Local and foreign partners are given opportunities to assist government.

” The Japan International Co-operation Agency, JICA is one of such partners that has tremendous impact in areas of Community engagement and development amongst other sectors.

” Last year, staff of the Ministry, NEDC and States were given the opportunity to experience how the trusting relationship between government and communities has helped recovery and development in Japan,” Sani-Gwarzo explained.

Study Tour

The Managing Director, North East Development Commission, NEDC, Mohammed Alkali commended JICA for sponsoring a study tour of Japan in October 2022.

Alkali who was represented by the Head of Research and Planning in the Commission, Professor Bobboi Umar Said the key lesson learnt from the study tour was inclusiveness of local communities in recovery and development planning governance to reduce trust deficit between government and the people.

To share Japan experiences of recovery and reconstruction in Hiroshima (World War II) and Iwaki (Great East Japan Earthquake).  To know the current efforts of trust building between government and community done by government and their issues and challenges. To discuss possible application of the Japan’s experiences to the North-East recovery and reconstruction”.

” Today’s top-level engagement with 112 LG Chairmen through the 6 State ALGON Chairmen and 6 Permanent Secretaries of Ministries of Local Government from North East States is strategic for sensitisation on the need to involve communities as stakeholders in development and governance using Japan as a model,” he explained.

He further said that the event would be followed soon by another workshop for Community Development Officers in all the 112 LGAs on their expected roles as bridges between government and communities.

” The Agency has been cooperating with the Commission in terms of recovery from disaster, especially from their Hiroshima incident. Though we are different, we can learn some forms of recovery from disaster.

“Apart from capacity development, there are also other interventions they did for us like scholarships for NEDC officials as well as posting other officials and experts to the Commission for two years and we are expecting further collaborations.

“Most of these development partners’ interventions are for Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe. So we are expecting that the other three states in the North-East region that’s Bauchi, Taraba, and Gombe should be supported as well.

“So, these are the major areas we are working in line with JICA mandate to help us support the other three states as well as specific sectors like health and education,” the NEDC boss said.

Responding, JICA Programme Officer on  Nutrition, Agriculture, and Peace Building in Nigeria, Dr. Umar Halilu, said the North East region was faced with insurgency and conflict for several years hence the need for the interventions in the areas of recovery and conflict resolution.

We are trying to share these lessons learned from those countries we had an intervention and to Nigeria’s context. That is why North East which is suffering from conflict is benefiting from this intervention.

“Largely, we believe that the local government is very vital to ensuring development in the communities because these groups of people are the closest to the community.

“So, one thing we try to do is to change the attitude of governance within that aspect of local government.

“We try to share experience how the LG can build trust between them, the service providers and the beneficiaries which are the community people, and to build this trust the community has to be involved in the decision-making and planning process,” Halilu said.

Wildfires kill 13 in Chile

0

Dozens of raging wildfires in Chile claimed at least 13 lives and torched some 35,000 acres of land.

This comes as a summer heatwave sweeps across the southern hemisphere country.

Report says eleven people, including a firefighter, had died in the town of Santa Juana in Biobio, south of capital Santiago.

The Minister of Agriculture also reported an emergency-support helicopter in the southern region of La Araucania had crashed, killing the pilot and a mechanic.

Meanwhile, states of catastrophe have been declared in the farming and forest areas of Biobio and neighboring Nuble, prompting the deployment of soldiers and additional resources.

Hundreds of homes have been damaged while 39 fires rage across the country, Interior Minister Carolina Toha said.

“The conditions in the coming days are going to be risky,” Toha said

She said ground equipment and a fleet of 63 available planes were reinforcing the firefight, with help from Brazil and Argentina expected.

President Gabriel Boric cut his summer vacation short and traveled to Nuble and Biobio.

“My role as president today is to ensure that all resources will be available for the emergency and so that people feel that they are not going to be alone,” Boric said.

He also pointed to signs that some fires may have been started intentionally.

Some families sought refuge in shelters, according to the Chilean disaster agency Senapred.

While Fires disrupted traffic on highways, and numerous settlements have been evacuated.
