NIS Calls For Unity Among Sports Stakeholders

0

‎The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, said Nigeria can become a sports destination if stakeholders deliberately work in unionism.

Shaibu made the assertion in Rabat, Morocco at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. He encouraged Nigerian Sports administrators to take a cue from what Morocco has achieved in recent times, following their investments in sporting infrastructure.

‎The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu.

‎”I think we leaders in Nigeria, myself inclusive, should, with deliberate effort, know that traveling is also education,” he said. “‎When we travel to places like this, we should also copy the good things we see and bring them to Nigeria.”

‎”Well, I think Morocco has gone very far, very, very far. Morocco is setting the pace in Africa now. When we went to South Africa for the World Cup in 2010, I thought South Africa was there, but with the kind of facility that I see in Morocco.”

“From when we came for the WAFCON till now, I can tell you that there’s a deliberate effort by Morocco to conquer Africa and to also involve the world as far as sport is concerned in the world. Because in Rabat, for instance, the stadium we played our World Cup qualifier is different from what we played yesterday.”

I thought that was the best, until yesterday, I saw that where we played the last time was just a tip of the iceberg, compared to the stadium we played yesterday. Morocco does seem to be a country in Africa, the infrastructure that I saw,” he added.

“It took us less than 30 minutes to get out of the stadium, even with that crowd, the infrastructure around the stadium, road infrastructure and control was marvelous. So we have a long way to go.”

‎The DG/CEO, who commended the President Olusegun Obasanjo-led administration for having the vision of sports infrastructure, pointed out that past sports administrators failed in their duties to maintain or even utilise facilities available in Nigeria.

‎”I will blame past sports administrators and leaders that have been treating sport with kids’ role. Because, for instance, I will thank President Obasanjo, for building the Moshood Abiola International stadium in Abuja,” he said.

“When you check that stadium facility and what is in that environment, you see that there was a president that also wanted to do what the Moroccans are doing now. But was it sustainable? No.”

“‎We built that kind of edifice in Nigeria but go there today, it’s rats and lizards and religious crusades that are taking over that stadium. Not sporting activities,” he added.

Venus Williams Thanks Australian Open For Wildcard Spot

0

Seven-time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams, thanked Australian Open organisers for giving her a wildcard, which would see the 45-year-old American become the oldest woman to compete in the singles main draw.

Williams returned to tennis last season after a 16-month break, winning one of her four tour-level matches before starting 2026 with a first-round defeat by 53rd-ranked Pole Magda Linette as a wildcard at the Auckland Classic last week.

Granted another wildcard for the Hobart International, world number 576 Williams was also eliminated in the first round against 38-year-old German Tatjana Maria. The match featured players with the highest combined age in WTA history.

“It’s been five years since I have been here. They flew by, and I’m super, super grateful for the opportunity from Tennis Australia,” Williams told reporters at Melbourne Park on Saturday.

“Grateful for the opportunity to play in front of the fans. I have just received so much support in the tournaments leading up, walking around the city and everything. My hope is to play my best.”

The allocation of discretionary wildcards has stoked debate at the Australian Open, with home player Nick Kyrgios in the spotlight before his decision to pull out of the men’s singles.

Though a huge drawcard at his home Grand Slam, Kyrgios played only four completed singles matches last season and is ranked outside the top 600.

Organisers subsequently gave 40-year-old former champion Stan Wawrinka a wildcard for the men’s singles.

Some fans have questioned whether Williams, who last won a Grand Slam match in 2021, deserves a wildcard ahead of an up-and-coming player but former Grand Slam champions Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters strongly backed the American’s participation.

Twice a finalist at Melbourne Park, Williams will surpass the record held by Japan’s Kimiko Date who was 44 when she lost in the first round of the 2015 Australian Open.

“I hadn’t thought about it till it came out in the press, so yay. Yay for me,” said Williams.

She said she had been training non-stop for three months ahead of the Grand Slam while preparing for her December wedding to Italian Andrea Preti.

“There were periods where I was super busy so I’d have to take a week off here or three days off there, but for the most part I was training and trying to get myself back in the groove,” said Williams,

She will face 24-year-old Serbian and world number 68 Olga Danilovic in the first round.

The COAS said the United States has remained a critical partner whose military professionalism and institutional depth have directly shaped the Nigerian Army’s leadership cadre and operational outlook.

The Nigerian Army has benefitted immensely from American military professionalism and institutional expertise,” he said.

He noted that several senior officers, including himself and principal staff officers at Army Headquarters, are products of United States professional military institutions, describing this as evidence of a relationship that has moved beyond symbolism into tangible capacity building.

Kinetic and non kinetic domain

The Army Chief said the Nigerian Army is particularly interested in expanding cooperation with the United States Army across both kinetic and non kinetic domains, including operational effectiveness, doctrine development and strategic capability enhancement.

We remain keen on leveraging the United States Army’s extensive experience in both kinetic and non kinetic operations to strengthen our institutional capacity and operational reach,” he stated.

He said as Nigeria’s security challenges continue to evolve in scale and sophistication, international military cooperation remains indispensable to achieving sustainable peace.

The United States Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Semira Moore, reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to strengthening its long standing military relationship with Nigeria.

She said the United States would continue to explore new areas of collaboration with the Nigerian Army, particularly in capacity building, intelligence sharing and joint operational planning.

Lieutenant Colonel Moore also disclosed that the United States remains committed to supporting the Nigerian Army in critical non kinetic areas, including humanitarian assistance and troop welfare initiatives, which she described as essential to sustaining morale and operational effectiveness in ongoing operations.
