Nigeria Approves $46.6m for Vaccines

0

Nigeria has taken a fresh step toward strengthening its immunisation programme with the release of $46.6 million for vaccine procurement, amid renewed calls for sustainable domestic financing to protect children and national health security.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Vaccine Network for Disease Control (VNDC), Mrs Chika Offor made this known during the 2025 Association of Nigeria Health Journalist conference, (ANHJ), in Abuja.

She described childhood vaccination as an imperative for national security and the building of a resilient human capital base.

Mrs Offor said; ” Nigeria records an annual birth cohort of between seven and nine million children, stressing that timely access to vaccines remains critical to reducing preventable deaths.

According to her, “about 2.3 million Nigerian children are currently classified as zero-dose,having missed out on routine immunisation.”

Mrs Offor noted that health security extends beyond military defence, explaining that a healthy population underpins economic growth and social stability.

Mrs Offor said that Nigeria’s health indicators reveal deep challenges, with about 40 percent of children affected by malnutrition, a situation she said weakens the country’s future workforce.

Mrs Offor called on the government to prioritise vaccine funding as a first-line charge, warning that delays in budget releases have previously resulted in vaccine stock-outs across health facilities.

She also commended recent interventions that reportedly reached over 17 million children within 10 weeks, describing the outcome as proof that effective delivery is achievable with political will and adequate funding.

Mrs Offor urged legislators to strengthen oversight of health budgets, security agencies to support access to hard-to-reach-communities, civil society organisations and the media to track accountability.

She called on government and partners to leave no child behind, eliminate zero-dose children, make no compromise on national health security, and fully fund immunisation.

President Tinubu Renews Strategic Support for Nigerian Army

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed his administration’s strategic commitment to the Nigerian Army, placing renewed emphasis on welfare, professionalism and operational effectiveness, as the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2025 opened in Lagos.

He also acknowledged the legislative and budgetary backing of the National Assembly, noting that such support has significantly enhanced the Army’s operational readiness across all theatres of operation.

Reaffirming the Army’s mission focus, Lieutenant General Shaibu said; “the Nigerian Army remains at the forefront of national efforts against terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other forms of criminality, adding that the force is deliberately transforming into a more professional, adaptive and technology-driven institution capable of confronting both conventional and asymmetric threats.”

Participants were urged to approach deliberations with patriotism, professionalism and a shared commitment to national peace and stability.

He stressed that the importance of the conference cannot be overstated, especially in view of Nigeria’s complex and dynamic security environment, which remains characterised by terrorism, banditry, criminality and other asymmetric threats.

“Nigeria continues to face… asymmetric threats that require sustained focus, strategic clarity and adaptive leadership,” General Musa noted.

He expressed confidence that the deliberations at the conference would generate actionable recommendations and innovative approaches capable of enhancing operational effectiveness in 2026 and beyond, while reinforcing the Nigerian Army’s role as a central pillar of national stability.

OGFZA Warns New Tax Law Threatens Investments

0

The Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA) has renewed calls for a 10-year tax relief for operators in Nigeria’s oil and gas free zones, warning that the immediate implementation of the new tax law could unsettle long-term investments across the sector.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of OGFZA, Mr Bamanga Jada, made the call in Onne, Rivers State, at a town hall meeting with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and OGFZA licensees.

Jada said the proposed relief would provide operators with the much-needed “adaptation space” to adjust their operations and ensure compliance with evolving tax requirements.

“Accordingly, OGFZA supports the call for a ten-year extension of existing tax incentives, coupled with a phased implementation to mitigate potential disruptions. Many of our licensees, including prominent foreign investors, formulate strategies spanning 10, 15 or even 25 years, based on prevailing incentives,” he said.

He noted that such a transitional window would strengthen policy consistency, which he described as critical to sustaining investor confidence and advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The OGFZA chief disclosed that Nigeria’s oil and gas free zones have attracted over $24 billion in investments, host more than 200 enterprises, and have created hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs nationwide.

“Energy-oriented free zones have been pivotal in driving development in several countries, as seen in the Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai and the Sohar Free Zone in Oman. These initiatives have attracted billions of dollars in investments, created massive employment opportunities and positioned their economies as global leaders,” Jada said.

Similarly, OGFZA-regulated free zones in Nigeria have secured more than $24 billion in investments, host over 200 enterprises, and have generated hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs. This highlights the value of strong incentives and effective regulation in accelerating industrialisation,” he added.

Jada further revealed that exports from Nigeria’s oil and gas free zones have surged under the current administration, reaching 496,537,804 metric tonnes, with products supplied to markets in Brazil, the United States, France, India, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea.

“Our operators now supply markets in Brazil, the United States, France, India, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Korea and beyond, in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

He commended President Tinubu for his commitment to tax reforms and economic transformation, while also acknowledging the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, for her guidance and advocacy in support of the sector.

Reaffirming OGFZA’s commitment to collaboration, Jada said the Authority would continue to work closely with FIRS, in line with their memorandum of understanding, to ensure tax reforms are implemented efficiently and fairly.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Dr Zacch Adedeji, described the 2025 tax reforms as a significant step towards modernising Nigeria’s fiscal framework. Represented by his Special Adviser on Tax Incentives, Dr Cletus Adie, Adedeji stressed that compliance and transparency remain central to the reforms.

“For export processing and free trade zones, the focus is not on taxing income or profits, but on promoting transparency, accountability and proper reporting,” he said.

He explained that the introduction of a tax clearance certificate as a mandatory requirement for licence renewal was aimed at strengthening oversight, citing what he described as “continuous recalcitrant behaviour by some enterprises”, which had made a structured administrative approach necessary, in line with Section 72(4)(f) of the Nigerian Tax Administration Act.

Stakeholders at the meeting unanimously urged the Federal Government to exempt operators in special economic and free zones from the new tax law provisions for a transitional period to enable a smooth adjustment to the reforms.

Nigeria Red Cross Partners WFP, Receives Emergency Equipments

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, NRCS, has received emergency safety equipment worth two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in aid from the World Food Programme, WFP.

Secretary General of the NRCS, Dr Abubakar Kende, received the equipment on behalf of the Society in Abuja shortly after signing an MoU with WFP to strengthen humanitarian response across Nigeria.

While commending the World Food Programme for the support, Dr Kende described the gesture as the localisation of the agenda.

He pledged that the NRCS would utilise the equipment judiciously for the benefit of humanity.

“The backbone of every humanitarian agency today has to do with logistics, storage and procurement systems, and WFP is all out to support this Society, strengthen its capacity not only at the Headquarters in Abuja, but also along our peripheries, the States where we operate”.

He commended the International Federation of the Red Cross for being instrumental in the partnership.

“What WFP is trying to do is to make sure that we meet up with the demands of time.”

The Deputy Country Director of the World Food Programme, Guy Adoua, described the NRCS as the pillar of humanitarian response in Nigeria, with a deep connection to the communities it serves.

According to him, the move was conceived with the idea to provide technical support, strengthen the systems, and enhance the ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies.

He said the WFP had also conducted a comprehensive organisational capacity assessment across key operational and technical areas of the NRCS.

“Since then, WFP has trained 45 Red Cross staff on cash-based transfer programming and trained 86 staff on warehouse management and operations in Kano and Port Harcourt, including hands-on exposure visits to WFP’s own warehouse facilities.”

These investments, he noted, were designed not only to build knowledge but to strengthen the systems that support effective humanitarian action.

Today, we are proud to take another step forward by handing over warehouse equipment to the Nigerian Red Cross Society. This equipment will enable your teams to put into practice the skills gained during the training, improve storage inventory management, and enhance prompt response when communities need it.

The World Food Programme said the gesture was the outcome of the Nigerian Red Cross Society’s unwavering dedication to serving vulnerable people across the country.

Ebonyi State to Reward Civil Servants With Christmas Bonus

0

Civil servants employed by the Ebonyi State Government will receive the sum of one hundred and fifty thousand naira each as their Christmas bonus.

Governor Francis Nwifuru, who announced this on Sunday at a church service held at the Government House Chapel, Abakaliki, said the gesture was in line with his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants in the state.

“The gesture is aligned with our commitment to improve the welfare of our civil servants despite dwindling revenue accruing to the state in the past year,” Governor Nwifuru said.

On the forthcoming local government elections in the state, the governor revealed that he has not endorsed any candidate for any position.

He promised a level playing field for all aspirants in the election, adding that the electorate reserves the right to elect their representatives.

“As far as I am concerned, the will of the people must prevail. The people must choose their representatives without interference from any quarter,” he said.

The Governor renewed his directive to political appointees wishing to contest the election to resign in line with electoral guidelines.

“It is not my duty to pick you as Chairman of your Local Government Area. If you are contesting for the chairmanship position in next year’s council elections, you must resign your appointment, as stipulated by law,” he added.

Nwifuru also dispelled rumours of lethargy in the Vincent Agwu Nwankwo Flyover (VANCO), which is widely regarded as a monumental infrastructural achievement of his administration.

“You cannot find any state in Nigeria that is currently undertaking such a flyover,” he said, adding that the construction rigours in the massive project will transform the area and give the state a facelift when completed.

He condemned misleading social media commentary on the project, pointing out that the government is taking steps to ensure that the state is counted among nations with advanced and modern infrastructure.

“We are doing it not because we have money, but because we want to sign our signature in the annals of history,” he emphasised.

Governor Nwifuru said that Ebonyi State aspires to be placed on the global map of good governance and to be recognised for its advanced and modern infrastructure.

Accord Party Affirms Governor Adeleke as Lawful Candidate

The Accord Party in Osun State has confirmed the incumbent governor of the state, Ademola Adeleke, as the lawful candidate to represent the party in the August 8, 2026, Osun Governorship Election.

Chairman of the party in Osun State, Babalola Akande, disclosed this at a press conference held in Osogbo on Sunday to debunk the nomination of a factional candidate.

Akande stated that the emergence of Governor Adeleke followed due process and was in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022.

He further stated that any person parading himself as a factional candidate of the party for the 2026 governorship election in the state was unknown to law and established judicial precedents.

Akande said Governor Adeleke was the sole candidate who participated in the party’s governorship primary election held last Wednesday, where he won votes from 145 out of 150 accredited delegates.

He said, “Let me state with absolute finality that Governor Ademola Adeleke is the duly nominated and lawful governorship candidate of the Accord in Osun State.

“This position is incontestable, irreversible, and firmly grounded in law, having emerged through due process in accordance with the Constitution of the Accord, the Electoral Act 2022, and established judicial precedents.”

Akande explained that under the law in Nigeria, only recognised political parties with duly constituted organs are authorised to conduct primary elections, describing the actions of another “Accord Party” as a mere charade.

Under the Electoral Act 2022, only recognised political parties acting through their duly constituted organs can lawfully conduct congresses or primary elections, after giving proper notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Any “primary” conducted outside this framework is illegal, null, void, and of no legal consequence whatsoever.”

The state party chairman urged residents of the state and the general public to disregard the news of the election of another candidate for the party, calling it a mere distraction orchestrated to derail the party’s peacefully conducted primary.

“The good people of Osun State are therefore urged to ignore these distractions, which are the handiwork of politically displaced actors who, having been repeatedly rejected by the electorate, now resort to impersonation, falsehood, and institutional sabotage in a futile bid to return to power through the back door,” he stated.

The Chairman reiterated that the Accord Party remains united, vigilant, and fully prepared to work with the people of Osun State for a renewed mandate for Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) says it has commenced an investigation into an incident involving a Hawker 800XP aircraft with nationality and registration marks 5N-ISB at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano State, Northwest Nigeria.

The commencement of the investigation was contained in a press statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, NSIB, Mrs Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, and made available to journalists in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The statement reads, “The aircraft, operated by Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited, departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Sunday, 14 December 2025, at approximately 09:20 hours local time, as a non-scheduled domestic passenger flight bound for Kano, with eight persons on board, comprising two cockpit crew members, one cabin crew member and five passengers.

“During the approach phase into Kano, the flight crew reported a landing gear indication anomaly and requested multiple low passes over the runway to allow air traffic controllers to visually confirm the landing gear position. Kano Tower confirmed on each low pass that all three landing gears appeared fully extended.

Lagos Government Promises Support for Food Entrepreneurs

0

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to encouraging innovative individuals and groups capable of scaling up the state’s food security systems.

Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance at the 2025 Lagos Food Festival held at Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, with the theme “Taste Without Borders”.

The governor said that over the past eleven months, the state government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, had implemented several interventions and empowerment initiatives that have positively impacted agripreneurs and the entire agricultural value chain.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems has done a great deal this year. It has empowered many entrepreneurs as part of efforts to support innovators and aggregators in the food business, allowing them to become independent and thrive as entrepreneurs.

“Families are also here to enjoy the exhibition of diverse food cultures and cuisines. You can see that the venue is filled with people. I even took on the role of a chef today. I cooked seafood rice with spinach and tasted my own cooking,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the festival was designed to bring families together while encouraging participants in the catering and food sector, adding that food serves as a powerful tool for telling the Lagos story.

“It is about people coming out to appreciate who we are: creative and fashionable people in all areas. Food is one way to showcase our art and skills. We are doing this on a budget while opening opportunities for many young talents, smart minds and businesses that are being transformed,” he added.

The governor further noted that it was imperative for the government to design programmes that uplift citizens and promote diverse skills, stressing that his administration would continue to take necessary steps to sustain food security and ensure Lagos remains a safe and welcoming home for all.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, described the festival, now in its fifth edition as an embodiment of what Lagos represents, particularly in culinary culture fused with entertainment.

Olusanya noted that the festival had created opportunities for food actors in the state to connect, network and expand their businesses beyond borders.

She said:

“Lagos is very diverse, it is very multicultural and so we believe that in celebrating everything that is Lagos, food is the embodiment of that and we as the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, we are the curators and the custodians of that, so it is best that we celebrate all of our value food chain actors and the Lagos Food Festival is a place to do so.

“We have had many stars made from the Lagos Food Festival just by reason of Mr Governor cooking along with them and tasting their foods and giving a word of encouragement. So, this is an avenue for us as the ministry of agriculture and food systems to solidify all of our interventions over the years and to celebrate everyone that makes it possible for all of us to eat in Lagos.”

She added that, given the multicultural nature of Lagos, the government remains committed to celebrating the state’s values and all food value chain actors.

Some participants at the festival, particularly food vendors, commended the state government for its continuous, all-year-round interventions aimed at ensuring the growth and sustainability of food businesses across the state.
