Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has emphasized the transformative power of sports in shaping the character and mental resilience of young people.
General Christopher Musa made the emphasis during the closing ceremony of the “LIVE FREE, STAY CLEAN” CHAMPIONSHIP of the Defence and Police Officer’s Wives Association (DEPOWA) Inter-Secondary Sports Championship in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
General Musa praised the initiative for its role in nurturing future leaders.
He noted that sports remains one of the most effective tools for instilling discipline, teamwork, and perseverance in youth, all of which are essential for national development.
The Defence Chief further stated that every child inspired by the championship represents a beacon of hope for Nigeria’s future.
“Whether as leaders, innovators, or athletes, these young individuals have the potential to contribute to a more united and progressive nation”, said General Musa.
“This is a clear demonstration that building the nation does not only depend on policy and politics, but begins with empowering our youth to dream, strive and achieve”, he added.
According to him, his passion for sports, particularly basketball was cultivated during his secondary school years.

He noted that the discipline, focus and resilience he learned through that experience have remained invaluable throughout his career.
“Basketball became my solace during the rigorous days of military training, teaching me lessons in strategy, endurance and leadership that have guided me in service to our nation.
“It is in this same spirit that I find immense joy in witnessing the encouragement of young minds through sports, as they prepare to take their rightful place in shaping the future of our country”, he said.
He commended DEPOWA for creating a platform that not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters unity and ambition among secondary school students.
According to him, this remarkable effort has provided a platform for nurturing hidden talents and instilling values of discipline, teamwork and patriotism in our children.
“Though the results may appear modest now, these initiatives are sowing the seeds for future stars and building morally upright youths who will become worthy ambassadors of our nation”.
He declared the championship closed.
Resilience and discipline
The DEPOWA president, Mrs Oghogho Musa expressed her gratitude to God and to the special Guest of Honour and husband, General Christopher Musa for his constant support and love and for standing by them as she admonished the stars of the championship.
“To the stars of this championship, our students: you have displayed exceptional talent, sportsmanship, and discipline. Whether you won a medal or not, you are all champions. You have run, jumped, and competed with honor, and we are immensely proud of you”.
She urged them to let the lessons they have learnt guide them.
“Let the friendships forged continue to grow. And may the message of this championship “Live Free, Stay Clean” remain in your hearts long after today”, she said.
Meanwhile, the Army day secondary school took overall first position.
