The United States has imposed visa restrictions on several senior officials from Rwanda over their alleged role in worsening the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a statement released, U.S Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measures target individuals believed to be contributing to instability in the region.

According to the United States Department of State, the visa restrictions are intended to hold accountable those accused of supporting actions that threaten peace and security in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The eastern part of the country has been experiencing renewed violence involving armed groups and government forces.

The unrest has displaced thousands of civilians and raised concerns among regional and international leaders.

Washington said the restrictions are part of efforts to push for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and encourage respect for sovereignty and stability in the region.

Rwanda has repeatedly denied allegations that it is supporting armed groups operating in eastern Congo.

However, tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have remained high as fighting continues near the border areas.

The U.S. government said it will continue to work with regional partners and the international community to support diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the violence and restoring stability in the conflict-affected region.
