Ghanaians gets jail term for smuggling cannabis into Nigeria

Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court Lagos South West Nigeria has convicted Nine Ghanaians for smuggling over ten thousand kilograms of cannabis into Nigeria through the sea to 72 years imprisonment.

They were initially arrested by men of the Civil Defence Corps and transferred to Anti-narcotic Agency, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution.

At the conclusion of investigations, they were arraigned and charged to court.

Delivering ruling, Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court, Lagos convicted the Ghanaians for conspiracy and dealing in cannabis and thereafter sentenced each of them to eight years in prison.

The convicts include: Victor Wuddah, Freeman Gazul, Adotete Joseph, Sottie Moses, Sottie Stephen, Christian Tette, Kanu Okonipa, Daniel Koyepti, and Kanu Natte.

Arrests

Meanwhile, the Anti-narcotic Agency has arrested  pregnant woman, a nursing mother and a 200-level university student as well as 28 others with over Nine thousand kilograms of cannabis and pharmaceutical opioids across 12 states of Yobe, Ondo, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Jigawa, Kogi, Adamawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The agency’s spokesperson Mr. Femi Baba Femi disclosed this in a press statement, Sunday.

While commending the officers and men of the affected Commands of the anti-narcotics Agency for their efforts at drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction, the Chief Executive, of the agency, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) charged them and their counterparts across the country not to rest on their oars.
