Gombe Primaries: Jibrin Barde picks PDP governorship ticket

Mr Muhammad Jibrin Barde has emerged as the Governorship Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in Gombe State with 160 votes defeating five other contestants.

Announcing the result, the Chief Returning Officer from the National PDP Secretariat, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, said the process was peacefully conducted.

Chief Ogiadomhe declared that Mr Barde polled the highest votes, thereby becoming the Governorship Candidate of the PDP in Gombe State.

He congratulated the other aspirants and party members because they were one family while calling on them to pull the resources together so that the PDP would win the Governorship election in 2023.

Mr Barde’s closest rival was Dr Jamilu Ishyaku Gwamna, who scored 119 votes, followed by Rtd. Air Vice Marshall, Adamu Suleiman scored 18 votes, while Dr Abubakar Ali Gombe scored 17, Dr Babayo Ardo Kumo scored 13 votes and Dr Gimba Ya’u Kumo scored 1 vote.

328 delegates from the 114 wards, 11 local government areas and 11 National Delegates voted, with one invalid vote.

The PDP in Gombe State adopted the delegates’ voting system, in which they were selected from the 114 wards to represent them during the primaries.

Mr Barde will now join the candidate of the All Progressives Congress and other parties when they equally elect their candidates. 

With the election of a PDP Governorship Candidate, the party has now concluded all primaries within the state.

It now remains the Presidential Primary Elections, scheduled for the 28th of May, 2022.

Mr Barde is the founder and Group Managing Director, of Suntrust Bank, but retired in 2018, to join the governorship race under the All Progressives Congress.

He lost out during the primaries in 2018 and joined the PDP in February 2021.

Barde is 51 years old, born on April 16, 1971.

Receiving his Certificate of Return, Mr Barde said the victory was for the people of Gombe State.
