The National Population Commission (NPC), in partnership with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), conducted a two-day refresher training on digital birth registration in Kano State, with support from the Government of the Netherlands through UNICEF.

The training brought together ALGON focal individuals and NPC District Civil Registrars from all 44 local government areas of the state.

Speaking at the event, the NPC State Director, Balarabe Kabir, said the programme is designed to strengthen the capacity of trainers who will, in turn, pass on the knowledge to Ward Focal Persons across the 484 wards in Kano State.

He explained that the training focuses on improving the use of the Vital Registration application, a digital platform for electronic birth registration, aimed at ensuring every child is properly registered and has a legal identity.

Kabir added that the exercise will improve technical skills, enhance data quality, and equip participants with practical knowledge for training and mentoring others, while also promoting uniform procedures among registrars.

An ALGON representative from Sumaila Local Government, Hamza Garba, described the training as timely, noting that participants are expected to pass down the knowledge at the grassroots level.

Also speaking, the Deputy Chief Registrar of Kabo Local Government, Umara Barka, said digital birth registration is key to strengthening civil registration. He added that the training has boosted staff morale and will help improve standards.

He called on relevant authorities to provide the necessary support to sustain the programme.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernise the civil registration system in Nigeria and ensure that every child is officially recognised from birth.
