Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd.), has reaffirmed the Ministry’s continued support for sporting activities following his conferment with the “Ambassador of Fair Play” award by the All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association.

The award was received during a courtesy visit to the Ministry on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwa, who stated that the Minister is a sports enthusiast and a firm believer in the role of sports in promoting national peace and unity.

He noted that Gen. Musa actively participates in both indoor and outdoor sporting activities, including golf and would continue to support initiatives that advance sports development.

The All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association’s Board of Trustees Chairman, Hon. Yakubu Dogara (L) with the Defence Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwa (R).

Earlier, the Association’s delegation, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the Ministry to reposition sports development.

He said it would begin with the Federal Capital Territory, to achieve outcomes comparable with those of developed economies.

Dogara explained that the Association seeks to promote sports as a vehicle for economic empowerment, youth development and the reduction of restiveness, with the broader objective of contributing to peace and national stability.

Representatives of various sporting disciplines, including golf, softball and baseball, gymnastics and basketball, appealed for the revival of sporting facilities within military barracks.

He noted that such structured environments have historically provided organised platforms for talent identification and development.
