The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced synchronous training sessions for successful applicants of the National Health Fellows Programme, a one-year initiative designed to drive innovation and meaningful change in health sector.
Addressing the fellows, the Coordinating Minister for Health & Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, described the programme as a “Gift and opportunity” from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, urging the participants to seize the moment, build themselves, and learn from their mentors, particularly in primary healthcare.
In a statement by the Deputy Director Information & Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, Prof. Pate emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to human capital development and leadership growth in the health sector.
He urged the fellows to view their training as a pathway to developing leadership traits of honesty, courage, and resilience.
“The National Health Fellows, selected on merit, represent the 774 local governments in Nigeria and come from diverse professional backgrounds.”
The Minister noted that their participation would not only shape their careers but also contribute to Nigeria’s healthcare transformation.
While inspecting the training centres in Abuja, Prof. Pate expressed optimism about the fellows’ potential, describing them as “Future leaders who will accelerate health sector reforms, enhance accountability, and drive sustainable change.”
He further revealed that 359,000 applicants who were not selected will have opportunities through the Associate Health Fellows Programme, ensuring broader participation in the nation’s health development initiatives.
Speaking on the impact of the programme, Godswill Michael from Nsenibom LGA, Akwa Ibom State, said the selection process had renewed his hope and faith in Nigeria, adding that the training would equip him with skills to contribute meaningfully to his community.
Another fellow, Nadia Abdullahi Ahmed from Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, described the initiative as a huge opportunity and a stepping stone for career advancement. She praised the transparent and seamless selection process, which, according to her, was merit-based.
The Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) Coordination Office of the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare facilitated the selection process, ensuring that only the most qualified candidates were chosen.
The National Health Fellows Programme is expected to produce a new generation of healthcare professionals and policymakers who will contribute to achieving a healthier and more prosperous Nigeria.
