Offiong Edem Retires After 20-Year Table Tennis Career

Nigerian table tennis legend Offiong Edem has announced her retirement from international competition, bringing an illustrious 20-year career to a close.

The 37-year-old, who has represented Nigeria at numerous major tournaments, including the Olympic Games, shared her decision on Thursday through her social media accounts, where she also hinted at plans to mentor young talents and inspire future champions.

“A proud 5-time Olympian, I bid farewell to the national team. It’s time to explore new horizons and nurture young table tennis talents, inspiring the next generation to surpass my achievements,” said the Calabar-born athlete, who reached a career-high world ranking of 89.

Reflecting on her journey, Edem expressed gratitude to her supporters. “From humble beginnings in Bayside to international recognition, I thank God for the talent and the opportunities it brought. So much has been achieved, and I’m grateful. I bow out and remain committed to empowering young stars in the table tennis community. Once again, thank you all for your support. Peace and love,” she wrote.

Over the years, Edem has become one of Nigeria’s most successful table tennis players, representing the country at multiple African Games, Commonwealth Games, and Olympic Games. Her achievements include several gold medals at the African Championships, where she consistently outperformed top players from across the continent.

Edem also played a vital role in Nigeria’s dominance in African team events and helped raise the profile of Nigerian table tennis on the global stage. Her Olympic journey included appearances at Athens 2004, London 2012, and Tokyo 2020, where her determination and resilience earned her respect as a formidable competitor.

As she transitions to a new phase of her career, Offiong Edem leaves behind a legacy of excellence, dedication, and inspiration for the next generation of Nigerian athletes.
