Mr Obi said the donation comprised N50,000,000(fifty million naira) which he personally raised for the hospital through his friend and a renowned New York-based paediatrician, Prof Dr Philip Ozuah, and his own personal donation of N25 million.
He said he had always talked to people of like minds to support society in critical areas such as health and education while appreciating Ozuah for the positive intervention.
The Labour Party leader commended the hospital for the wonderful work they are doing in the areas of health, education, and poverty reduction.
According to Mr Obi, the hospital management treats people, including the poor, who cannot pay their bills, so individuals like me should come to their aid and support them.
“I have been doing this for years and will continue to offer my support for this. I will always support institutions that are well-managed.
“Encouraging more investment in our health sector, especially at the primary healthcare level, is critical to the development of any nation. A healthy nation, they say, is a wealthy nation. Governments at all levels, therefore, must prioritize investment in the health sector.
“I most sincerely thank the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters for the wonderful work they are doing in critical areas of development such as health, education, and pulling people out of poverty.
“I am therefore glad with how they have continued to grow and improve in their healthcare delivery to the people. I, therefore seize this ample opportunity to urge and encourage other well-meaning Nigerians and donor agencies to continue to support our health and education sectors and in pulling people out of poverty, as they play very critical roles in our developmental journey to a New Nigeria, which , I keep insisting , is possible.”
In their separate speeches, the superior-general, Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother of Christ, Mother Maureen Akabogu and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, Rev. Sister Maria Nkiruka Okafor thanked Obi and his friend, Prof. Philip Ozuah for coming to the aid of the hospital.
Mother Akabogu said that before the news of Obi’s donation to them came to her, she had been passing sleepless nights because of the challenges of delivering healthcare services and other acts of charity facing them in the hospital.
“This gesture given to us today, Mr. Peter Obi and his friend, Prof. Philip Ozuah will greatly help us to continue to do the good work we are doing in this hospital, giving treatment to people with different sicknesses, both the rich and the poor; caring for the poor, etc.
“I pray that Our Lord Jesus Christ will reward them and their well shall never go dry, in Jesus name, Amen,” she said.
