During a recent visit to Dr. Soludo at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, the chairman of the Anambra State Red Cross branch, Prof. Charity Ifeyinwa, emphasized the importance of the collaboration in improving humanitarian services and disaster management across the state.
In her address, Ifeyinwa revealed that in 2024 alone, the Red Cross responded to approximately 365 emergencies, including building collapses, boat mishaps, and road traffic accidents. She highlighted the sacrifices made by Red Cross members, with three individuals risking their lives and one suffering a disability in the line of duty.
She said, “This visit is aimed at further strengthening the collaboration between the Red Cross and the office of the First Lady. And this cannot be achieved without counting our humanitarian successes and the impact made during the outgoing year 2024.
“During the year under review, the Red Cross, with support from our national headquarters, international agencies and other individuals distributed N231,550 million cash transfer through our ATM system to 3,200 households affected by flooding in 22 communities. We distributed food and non-food items to 2,600 households.
“We have also been a strong supporter of the ‘Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo’ by providing free medical first aid training during outreach of the foundation across the state, we have previously donated water buckets to the club’s ‘safe drinking water’ project and today, we will present more 500 buckets, 200 jerry cans and 1,000 aqua tab to the club, because together, we must provide clean and safe drinking water to every Anambra resident.
“We are also solidifying the partnership between Red Cross and ‘Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo’ through a Memorandum of Understanding, which will enable us drag in more international recognition and material support in the coming year.”
During the visit, she took the opportunity to appeal to the First Lady to leverage her influence to enhance the state government’s acknowledgment and support of the society, and to facilitate a meeting with the state governor.
On her part, Anambra first lady expressed gratitude for the Red Cross’s contributions to humanitarian services and disaster management, pledging continued cooperation to ensure the well-being of Anambra residents.
She said, “We cannot count our successes without mentioning the Red Cross. You have been with us all this while and we love what you are doing in the area of humanitarian services and disaster management, as well as ensuring a safer environment.
“Humanitarian efforts are what Red Cross is noted for and your reward will come to you. We assure you of cooperation and collaboration. These relief materials and items the society has donated are good for our children and once we continue to have things like this, diseases will be far away from the communities.”
In recognition of her support, the Governor’s wife was honored as the grand patron of the Red Cross.
