The Nigeria Police Force has introduced “Information Boxes” to be placed at strategic public locations within Calabar, the capital of Cross River State in south-south Nigeria.
The State’s Commissioner for Police, Mr Gyogon Grimah told journalists that the essence of introducing the information boxes was due to its “Intelligence driven policing, deployment of officers and men for visibility policing.
“Strategically placing the boxes at shopping malls and other places will enable the public pass security information to the police undercover. It is clear that police personnel alone cannot accomplish the set-goals without the collaborative efforts of the public.
“I want to reassure residents and unsuspecting persons to continue their good works in crime fighting through information dissemination to the police devoid of betrayal or any unpleasant consequences,” the commissioner stated.
Continuing, Grimah also said that; “It is worthy to note that modern policing methodology requires complementary role through citizens’ participation in all the nooks and crannies irrespective of the geographical location.”
Community Support
On community engagement, Grimah urged the traditional institution, community leaders, religious and youth representatives to effectively collaborate with security operatives especially with the advent of the new administration at the national and state levels.
According to him, “Community policing is yielding tremendous result. It is an initiative of the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba to formally bring policing to the doorsteps of the people.
“Let me put a call on traditional institutions, community leaders, religious and youth leaders to see security as a collaborative business in addressing all forms of awful crimes across the state,” the police commissioner stressed.
He warned those whom he described as enemies of peace and persons unlawfully acquiring and possessing firearms to desist from perpetuating crimes or face the wrath of the law.
“The command is resolved to consciously operate on the principles of justice, equity and rule of law as enshrined in the extant laws of the federation as operational guide in enforcement of law and order,” he said.
“I want to reiterate the commands commitment to totally clampdown against criminal elements indulging in kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery and other sundry in the state,” he added.
