The Nigerian Senate has pledged deeper collaboration with the Nigerian Army to strengthen national security efforts, promising legislative and oversight support to enhance military capability and service delivery.
This assurance was given during an oversight visit by the Senate Committee on Army, led by its Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, to Army Headquarters in Abuja.
The visit which took place on Thursday 31 July, was part of the committee’s mandate to monitor the implementation of the 2023 and 2024 Appropriation Acts across military formations.

According to a statement by Acting Director Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Senator Yar’Adua commended the Nigerian Army for its operational efficiency and project execution, noting that the committee had observed significant progress during its nationwide assessment of Army formations.
“The visit has provided us with firsthand insights into the challenges and achievements of the Nigerian Army. We are satisfied with the outcomes and will ensure continued legislative support,” Senator Yar’Adua said, while also praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising national security.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed gratitude to the President for his “uncommon support” to the Armed Forces and lauded the Senate Committee for its consistent engagement.
He stressed the Army’s growing operational and welfare needs and advocated for an increase in budgetary allocation.
COAS Oluyede said: “We urge the National Assembly to support the removal of the Nigerian Army from the current envelope budgeting system. This is essential to address pressing logistical shortfalls, inadequate accommodation, and funding for operations.”
The oversight visit marks a reaffirmation of legislative-executive cooperation in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
