Sokoto State, Nigerian Union of Journalists Inaugurate “Go Green Project”

The Sokoto State Government, Northern Nigeria, through the Universal Basic Education Board in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has inaugurated a ‘Go Green Project’ to curtail the effects of desertification across the State.
Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal made the official inauguration of the projects at the Universal Basic Education Smart School in Sokoto State.
Tambuwal said massive plantation of trees would help to improve teaching and learning of pupils in all schools across the State.
According to him, the State government has given more priority to environmental protection through provision of many policies that enhance socio-economic development of the State.
“Recently, government provided over two million seedlings that was planted across the State.
“Also, through Zakat and endowment commission, the State government launched massive tree-planting campaigns to help tackle environmental degredation across the 23 local government areas of the State,” he said.
Tambuwal reiterated the State government’s commitment to introduce meaningful programmes with direct impact, not only on schools, but on all sectors of human development.
In his remarks, the Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, Altine Shehu Kajiji, said the project would provide regreening of the environment.
He explained that the project will establish 10 gardens in 10 junior secondary schools and 10 others in 10 primary schools to enhance effective teaching and learning environment.
According to Kajiji, the project was targeting planting 1 million trees annually to curb the effects of climate change in Sokoto State.
“… because of the importance attached to tree planting, the Go Green project
commenced with over 100,000 seedlings.
“This will go a long way in providing a beautiful teaching and learning atmosphere as well as curtail other environmental issues,” said Kajiji.
Also, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, commended the initiative, saying that it would improve vegetation and the environment.
Sultan Sa’ad, who was represented by Sa’in Kilgori, Muhammad Jabbi, urged the project to engage all relevant traditional institutions to ensure effective implementation of the targeted number of tree plantings.
He commended Governor Tambuwal for introducing a number of policies and programmes for enhancing socio-economic development of the State.
He assured the Sultanate council of more commitment to work hand-in-hand with the programme to improve vegetation and environmental protection.
