José Mourinho has been sacked by English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur after just 17 months in charge, the club announced in a statement on Monday.

The sacking is coming just six days before Tottenham face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with the club bidding to win its first piece of silverware in 13 years.

The Portuguese manager who led Spurs to the Carabao Cup final, leaves the club with them sitting seventh in the Premier League with six games left of the domestic season to play.

His last game was a 2-2 draw on Friday against Everton that left Tottenham in seventh place in the Premier League and unlikely to reach the top four.

Mourinho took charge in November 2019, replacing Mauricio Pochettino. In his first campaign, Mourinho took Tottenham from 14th in the Premier League to sixth, securing Europa League qualification for 2020/21. however,  RB Leipzig knocked Spurs out of the 2019 Champions League at the round-of-16 stage.

This season, the club was dumped out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb in the last-16.

The London club is also among 12 that shocked the football world on Monday by announcing the formation of a breakaway European Super League.

Tottenham play Southampton on Wednesday with the club five points off the Champions League places.
