U-19 Women’s T20: Nigeria Crashes Out Despite Victory

237

Nigeria’s U-19 Women’s cricket team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, crashed out of the T20 World Cup after a dramatic six-run victory over Ireland, finishing just one point behind England in the Super Six stage in Bangi, Malaysia.

The win was a testament to the resilience and determination of the young Nigerian side, marking a memorable end to their campaign.

Despite a shaky start with the bat where four of the top five Nigerian batters fell for single-digit scores, the team showed remarkable grit. Opener Christabel Chukwuonye anchored the innings with a patient 25 off 42 balls, striking three boundaries. However, wickets continued to tumble at the other end, leaving Nigeria struggling at 21 for 4.

A crucial lower-order fightback saw Omosigho Eguakun (17 off 23), Peculiar Agboya (17 not out off 20) and captain Lucky Piety (12 off 11) step up at the right moment. Their contributions ensured the team reached a competitive total, with key partnerships stabilising the innings.

Ireland started their chase strongly, reaching 40 for 2 by the eighth over and looking set to secure a victory. However, Nigeria’s bowlers, led by Ude, turned the game around in dramatic fashion. A sudden collapse saw Ireland lose four wickets for just 14 runs, reducing them to 54 for 6.

Support from Anointed Akhigbe played a pivotal role in this collapse, striking twice in the 12th over, including the crucial dismissal of Ireland’s top-scorer, Rebecca Lowe, who managed 21 off 32 balls. Another 4-for-14 collapse towards the end sealed Ireland’s fate, as they were dismissed for 88 in 18.4 overs.

The star of the match Lillian Ude, delivered a sensational spell, taking 3 wickets for just 11 runs in her four overs.

Her performance was instrumental in defending Nigeria’s modest total of 94 for 7, ensuring a narrow but significant win as Ireland was bowled out for 88 with eight balls to spare.

Nigeria’s performance in the tournament showcased the immense potential of the young squad. Their ability to fight back under pressure and execute strategic bowling plans bodes well for the future of women’s cricket in the country.

The victory over Ireland serves as a fitting conclusion to a campaign filled with lessons, growth and glimpses of brilliance from Nigeria’s next generation of cricketers.

With this strong finish, the team will undoubtedly take confidence in future competitions, continuing to develop and inspire a new wave of female cricketers in Nigeria. The Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup may be over for them, but their journey is just beginning.
