Ukraine Eyes Mozambique Gas Deal Amid War-Driven Energy Crisis

Ukraine has expressed interest in importing liquefied natural gas from Mozambique as continued Russian attacks strain its energy capacity.

President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the potential partnership with his Mozambican counterpart Daniel Chapo during a call on Monday. Following the talks, Zelensky said Ukraine could support Mozambique in addressing “security challenges” in exchange for access to gas supplies.

“Ukraine is interested in additional energy supplies. Mozambique is interested in Ukraine’s experience and technologies to strengthen its internal security and protect people from terror,” Zelensky wrote.

Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Ukraine’s domestic gas production met nearly all of its energy needs. However, sustained Russian strikes have significantly damaged its infrastructure. According to Central Bank Governor Andriy Pyshnyi, the country has lost roughly half of its gas output.

Mozambique, meanwhile, is emerging as a key energy supplier in Africa. Major projects led by TotalEnergies and Eni are expected to boost exports. TotalEnergies recently resumed its $20 billion liquefied natural gas project after a five-year suspension caused by a major insurgent attack.

The potential partnership highlights how shifting geopolitical dynamics are driving new energy alliances, as Ukraine looks beyond traditional sources to secure its energy future.
