World Health Day: Nigeria Pledges to Overcome Healthcare Challenges

Nigeria has joined the global community in observing World Health Day 2024, renewing its commitment to address pressing healthcare issues both nationally and internationally.

Under the theme “My Health, My Right,” this year’s World Health Day emphasizes the fundamental principle that every individual deserves access to high-quality healthcare without discrimination or barriers.

In a statement signed by Director, Information of the Ministry, Patricia Deworitshe, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, the highlights the entrenched right to health as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, while acknowledging the ongoing struggle for equitable healthcare access in Nigeria.

“In response to these challenges, the Federal Government has implemented initiatives such as the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal and Investment Initiative to promote universal healthcare access and bridge existing gaps”, He said.

“Strategic partnerships and targeted programs like the BHCPF aim to extend essential healthcare services to underserved communities, strengthen primary healthcare delivery, and enhance infrastructure across the nation”, He added.

“Despite progress, persistent obstacles including inadequate infrastructure and healthcare workforce shortages persist, prompting a redoubling of efforts to prioritize primary healthcare services for all Nigerians”, He said.

Prof. Pate said while government initiatives continued, individual responsibility for health is emphasized, with citizens encouraged to adopt healthy behaviors, prioritize preventive healthcare measures, and seek timely medical attention when necessary.

“On the occasion of World Health Day, stakeholders are urged to collaborate in addressing existing healthcare challenges and advancing the right to health for every Nigerian”, He said.

“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare remains steadfast in its commitment to improving healthcare systems, enhancing health outcomes, and ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind in the pursuit of universal health coverage,” he added.
