Zamalek Volleyball Club of Egypt have retained its African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship title after beating Al Ahly of Egypt 3-1 (29-27, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22) in Sunday’s final, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria.
The encounter was fast and furious as both teams fought to establish a lead tied at 27-27. Al Ahly made faults and Zamalek continued to find gaps to push ahead for 29-27 set win. Zamalek then came back fighting to lead 5-0 in the second set as Al Ahly lost a bit of concentration, forcing them to call for an early timeout.
It was tight afterwards as Al Ahly scored two points with an ace. Players were diving across the court to save balls and there was plenty of brilliant skills on display. However, Al Ahly fought back through Tatyana Bokan to win the second set 25-22.
Shell shocked from the second set, Zamalek knew that they had to put it behind them and get on positively with the next set. Which they did, taking an early lead and putting much more pressure on the Al Ahly players. With the score at 19-16 confidence was high and a few costly errors from Al Ahly gave Zamalek a 25-20 third set win.
Zamalek blocked very well, giving Al Ahly a new challenge that took time to adjust to in the 4th set. Zamalek then claimed the 4th set 25-22 and successfully defended their title.
In the third place match, Kenya Pipeline secured the bronze medal with a commanding 3-0 (28-26, 25-14, 25-18) victory over CF Carthage of Tunisia.
The two clubs that represented Nigeria at the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship, the hosts, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) finished 10th and 11th respectively, out of the 16 teams that participated in the two week Long championship.
The remaining positions from 5th to 16th on the log were already occupied a day before the finale, following classification matches concluded on Saturday.
Police of Rwanda beat Nigeria Customs Service 3-1 to occupy 9th position while the hosts settled for 10h on the ranking table. The second Nigerian team, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), claimed 11th position after a tight 3-2 beating of La Loi VLL of DR Congo, who ended 12th in final ranking.
In the classification final for 5th and 6th positions, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) were the better side with a 3-0 win to claim bragging right over its compatriots Kenya Prisons who had to settle for 6th position.
In other classification matches, Mayo Kani Evolution of Cameroon finishes the championship with final ranking of 13 leaving Descartes to settle for the 14th position.
Senegal’s Sococim (SOC) also defeated Spiking Stars (SVV) of Botswana 3-0. SOC finished the championship on position 15 while debutants, SVV came last (16th) on the tournament’s table.

Meanwhile, Nigerian First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, while declaring the championship closed, applauded the organisers and Teams for the high standard exhibited throughout the event.
Senator Tinubu also urged the Champions to sustain the tempo and ensure that Africa gets effective representation at the World Volleyball Women’s Club Championship later in the year.
