The Kano state government, through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has come to the aid of a vulnerable family in Tukuntawa, Local Government Area, Kano.
The Commissioner, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya expressed deep concern over the family’s situation during a press briefing.
The family, comprising an elderly woman, Hauwa’u, and her eight children, had been living in dire conditions after losing her husband and father of her eight children several years ago.
They were forced to sleep in a school building at night, moving to their elder daughter’s matrimonial house in the morning.
The family struggled to make ends meet, with no access to food or medical attention.
Commissioner Kibiya revealed that the government had secured a new home for the family, complete with food items, medical care, and education support.
He emphasized the state government’s commitment to uplifting the standard of living among its citizens, particularly the vulnerable.
“Preparations are underway to construct thousands of houses for those in need, with Hauwa’u’s family being among the beneficiaries.”
Mr. Kibiya said, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has also provided a new house for the family, while the state government will build on the land Hauwa’u inherited from her late husband.
The Commissioner appealed to philanthropists, NGOs, and other stakeholders to support the less privileged in society.
The family’s plight was brought to light during an interview with the guard of the school, Malam Shehu Yusuf, who explained that one of the daughters, Atika Yahaya, had sought his assistance to allow the family to sleep in the school.
Atika commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Commissioner Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs for the intervention.
“The food I prepared was donated by a kind neighbour as we can’t afford three square meals,” she said.
This intervention is part of the state government’s efforts to address poverty and vulnerability in Kano State.
Similar initiatives have been implemented in other parts of the state, including the provision of monetary support to over 9,000 vulnerable people across 44 local government areas
