The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Migrants Resource Centre (MRC), a department under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, has organised a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Programme (MHPSS) for returnees who have come back to Nigeria from various countries.

The three-day programme with the theme ‘Life Skills’  was held at the Skill Acquisition Centre of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Lagos State, South-West, Nigeria.

The Inspector of Factories at the MRC, Miss Iyanuoluwa Fisher, said the programme was designed to assist returned migrants in reintegrating into society.

She noted that some returnees experience depression and stress, explaining that the training would help them develop life skills, build businesses, strengthen communities, improve communication, and reflect positively on their experiences.

Miss Fisher also explained the MHPSS Programme, describing mental health as a state of complete well-being.

She stressed that the training provided a safe space for returnees to relax, regain stability, and rebuild hope for a second chance in life.

Miss Fisher further stated that migration was right but must be done legally.

She stressed the importance of proper documentation and approved processes, warning against illegal migration routes and encouraged safe migration.

She also warned that irregular migration exposes people to risks such as kidnapping and death.

Miss Fisher also advised migrants to seek guidance from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on safer migration options.

She further encouraged migrants to report to the police and IOM officials whenever they are contacted for irregular travel arrangements.
