The Nigerian government has extended congratulations to the government and the people of Zimbabwe on the occasion of their Independence Day, celebrated annually on April 18.

The celebration marks Zimbabwe’s attainment of independence in 1980, a milestone widely regarded as the culmination of the country’s liberation struggle and its transition to sovereign statehood.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria highlighted the significance of the anniversary as a reflection of the resilience, determination, and aspirations of the Zimbabwean people.

The occasion also serves as a reminder of Africa’s broader journey toward freedom, dignity, and self-determination, values that continue to shape the continent’s development and unity,” the statement reads.

Nigeria commended Zimbabwe for its contributions to regional and continental affairs, particularly in promoting African solidarity, economic cooperation, and multilateral engagement.

The country’s active participation in regional initiatives was described as a testament to its commitment to peace, stability, and sustainable development in Southern Africa and beyond.

The Nigerian Government further emphasised the longstanding and cordial diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Zimbabwe, rooted in shared historical experiences, including the struggle against colonialism and the pursuit of African liberation.

Both nations have continued to collaborate within international frameworks such as the African Union and the United Nations to advance peace, security, and inclusive development across the continent.

According to the statement, “bilateral relations between the two countries have continued to expand across key sectors, including trade and investment, education, agriculture, capacity building, and cultural exchange.”

Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to deepening engagement with Zimbabwe through sustained diplomatic dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation.

The statement also underscored the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties, noting that such connections help reinforce cultural affinity, shared identity, and common aspirations for prosperity and continental integration.

Reaffirming its commitment to further consolidating relations, Nigeria expressed optimism about continued collaboration in areas that support economic growth, democratic governance, and regional stability.

The Government wished Zimbabwe continued peace, progress, and national prosperity.
