Apple Map Renames Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

On Tuesday, Apple updated its maps to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, following an order by President Donald Trump. This change was made official by the U.S. Geographic Name Information System.

Google announced last month that it would implement the change once the official listing was updated and confirmed on Sunday that the update is being rolled out. U.S. users will see “Gulf of America” on Google Maps, while Mexican users will see “Gulf of Mexico.” Others will see both names.

President Trump had ordered the name change for the water bordered by the Southern United States, Mexico, and Cuba shortly after taking office.

The name update was officially confirmed late Sunday by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.

Microsoft has also adopted the new name on its Bing maps.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press will continue to refer to the Gulf of Mexico by its original name, which it has held for 400 years, while also acknowledging the new name, Gulf of America.
