First Lady Launches Food Outreach Scheme in Cross River

Nigeria’s first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI)’s Social Investment Programme tagged ‘Food Outreach Scheme’ in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, southern Nigeria.

Senator Tinubu, who was represented by the wife of Nigeria’s Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, kicked-off the distribution process with the donation of assorted food items to vulnerable groups in Cross River State.

The items, received on behalf of the vulnerable groups by the wife of the Cross River State governor, Mrs. Eyoanwan Otu, were formally distributed to thousands of vulnerable people amongst them widows, people with special needs, the elderly and women generally.

In a keynote speech at the distribution venue, the national coordinator of the initiative, Senator Tinubu, said since the launch of the food outreach scheme in the Federal Capital Territory, the team has visited other states to donate the items received from dedicated industries on a monthly basis aimed at impacting countless lives.

The First Lady said, “as we continue to touch the lives of vulnerable people amongst us through our various intervention programmes, we have come here to support families with assorted food items as we have done in some states. So, as we launch the programme in Cross River State, we encourage the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the essential food items for their families.”

Speaking directly to the beneficiaries, she said, “please do not divert these food items to other roads, take it home and eat with your families. Our greatest desire is for this initiative to have a tangible impact on the lives of our people as we strive to achieve a better future.”

In addition to the donations, Senator Tinubu announced that under the Renewed Hope Initiative, a grant scheme worth ₦200 thousand would be launched next week to cater for 350 elderly individuals in all the Nigerian States to enable them to meet their basic daily needs.

She explained that the initiative, through it multi-sectoral programmes, would continue to support the lives and empower women, young girls and vulnerable people to live better lives.

Beacon of Hope

Also speaking, the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Otu expressed profound appreciation to the national coordinator of the Renewal Hope Initiative, Senator Tinubu whom she described as an amazon and beacon of hope to Nigerians.

She remarked, “We stand united in purpose to extend the hands of compassion, love and care to our vulnerable populations in Cross River State through the Food Outreach Scheme, a laudable vision and initiative of a noble woman whose heart beats for humanity.

“Your unwavering dedication to empowering and uplifting lives through impactful initiatives like this inspires us all. The people of Cross River State deeply appreciate this gesture of love and generosity, which aligns perfectly with our shared vision of building a more inclusive and supportive society, through touching lives and changing destinies,” she said.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation to Nigeria’s first lady for conceiving the initiative and implementing same, which would enable them enjoy Christmas with their families, neighbours and friends.
