The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has officially named filmmaker Funke Akindele, the Nollywood Box Office Champion, celebrating a four-year streak of cinematic dominance that culminated in a record-breaking 2026.
The Billion-Naira Milestone
Akindele was recognized for her unprecedented commercial success across several major releases:
- 2020: Omo Ghetto: The Saga
- 2024/2025: Everybody Loves Jenifa
- 2026: Behind The Scenes, which grossed a staggering 2.7 billion Naira.
The Executive Director of the NFVCB, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, described the award as a milestone for the industry. “This is a statement that excellence in cinema exhibition matters,” Husseini said during the ceremony in Lagos.
A “Phenomenon” in Nigerian Cinema
The event drew praise from top government officials and industry heavyweights.
In a video message, the Minister of Arts, Culture, Creative Economy and Tourism, Hannatu Musa Musawa, labeled Akindele a “phenomenon” and a trailblazer setting new global benchmarks for Nollywood.
The Chairperson of AFRIF, Chioma Ude, and the GM of the National Theatre, Mrs. Akerele, also lauded Akindele’s resilience and her ability to blend cultural resonance with massive commercial returns.
Akindele’s Secret: “Unity and Hard Work”
Accepting the award, Akindele attributed her success to strategic planning and a deep connection with her audience. She also addressed her viral marketing tactics—specifically the energetic dancing used to promote Behind The Scenes.
“It was a creative and cost-effective marketing strategy rooted in originality,” Akindele explained.
She closed with a call for collaboration within the industry: “Nollywood is big enough for everyone. Consistency and professionalism will always be recognized” she said.
