The Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), Tony Akiotu, has highlighted the critical role of the media in promoting responsible reporting, especially during election periods.
Speaking at the VON Forum 2026, he stressed the need for accuracy, balance, and professionalism in all coverage.
Akiotu emphasised that broadcasters and journalists have a constitutional duty to uphold ethical standards, ensuring their “reporting reflects all perspectives and avoids one-sided narratives that could heighten political tensions.”
He reminded BON members to operate strictly within the guidelines of the Nigerian Constitution and the NBC Code, which require impartial and balanced reporting at all times.
Akiotu further noted that efforts would be intensified to minimise media-induced tensions ahead of forthcoming elections.
He urged all stakeholders to “remain committed to responsible journalism as a cornerstone for safeguarding national unity, democratic stability, and public trust.”
