By Feyisayo Oyebanji, Abuja

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) says it will host a high-level Conference on Donor Facilitation and Diplomatic Support Engagement aimed at strengthening international partnerships for environmental restoration in Ogoniland and the wider Niger Delta region.

The conference is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja Nigeria’s capital and is expected to attract diplomats, donor agencies, development partners, environmental experts, multilateral institutions, and private sector stakeholders.

Speaking at a pre-conference press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ogoni Trust Fund Incorporated, Emmanuel Deeyah, said the engagement is designed to deepen strategic partnerships in support of ongoing environmental remediation and sustainable development efforts in Ogoniland.

According to him, the conference will explore collaborative pathways for accelerating environmental clean-up, public health interventions, livelihood restoration, portable water projects, mangrove restoration, and sustainable community development.

HYPREP Project Coordinator, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, described the conference as an important platform for strengthening international cooperation and mobilising technical support for environmental sustainability.

The Minister of Environment, Mr Balarabe Abbas Lawal, is expected to deliver the opening remarks, while the Dutch Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Bengt van Loosdrecht, will present a goodwill message.

A major highlight of the conference will be a technical presentation showcasing HYPREP’s achievements, ongoing interventions, challenges, and future priorities in the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recommendations on Ogoniland.

HYPREP said that since the commencement of operations in 2016, it has completed Phase One remediation across 50 lots, while Phase Two remediation is ongoing in 39 lots covering over 125 hectares of impacted land.

The agency also disclosed that more than 1.5 million mangrove seedlings have been planted, over 7,000 direct jobs have been created, and portable water projects have been expanded to dozens of communities across Ogoniland.

The conference is also expected to feature panel discussions and interactive donor engagement sessions aimed at encouraging investment, technical partnerships, and long-term diplomatic support for ecological sustainability in the Niger Delta.
