Matawalle FC Clinches Mailafia Peace and Unity Cup Trophy.

The 9th Edition of the Mailafia Peace and Unity Cup came to a climax as Matawalle of Doma defeated Greater Tomorrow of Lafia 1-0 in the final, at the Government Secondary School Daddare in Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, Nigeria.

Matawalle FC scored at the 1st minute of the game to the shock of spectators, the fastest goal ever since the first edition of the tournament by one of Matawalle’s strikers Ikechukwu Inum and it ignited tension among players and fans.

The Greater Tomorrow FC although were discouraged by the early goal, they brace up and started to advance for a equaliser.

Despite all efforts to come very close on multiple times but Matawalle FC goalkeeper Osegalo Azah was on hand to deny the opponent from finding the back of his net as the game came into conclusion.

Speaking after the game, sponsor of the tournament, Hon. Yakubu Agabi Mailafia, disclosed that he was satisfied with the level of display from both sides, noting that his drive is to see young men making it in their chosen careers.

He further said he expect a better organisation, better pricing, the best football for the next coming edition, because it’s going to be a decade of football at the grassroots.

After 90 minutes of the encounter, FC Matawalle in their second appearance took home the coveted trophy and a prize of 1.3 million naira, while Greater Tomorrow settled for 1 million naira as runners up.

Jarmai United and Adudu Best finished third and fourth with prize of 700,000 naira and 400,000 naira respectively. For the individual awards, Matawalle FC’s Osegalo Azah won the best Goalkeeper of the tournament, while Fulafia Tigers Henry Yua won the Top scorer gong after scoring five goals from four goals.

The tournament, which kicked off in October 2025, featured 32 teams from Southern Nasarawa State. Organizer Amb. Mailafiya Yakubu Agabi, stated that the event aimed to discover local talent and announced plans to commence the 10th edition soon.

The chairman of the organising committee of the tournament, Hon. Mohammed Danazumi, explained that the essence of the competition is to maintain peace, bring unity among the youth and create jobs for the youth to be self reliant.

Danazumi further said he was quite impressed by the teams this year, because in every year, you see different players, you see improvement in the players and the teams that are participating.”
