The outbreak, which surfaced on March 21, 2024, has already claimed seven (7) lives and left 196 others battling the unknown illness across Isa, Sabon Birni, and Ilella Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The mission commenced with a visit to the Sokoto Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, where Dr. Idris and key stakeholders reviewed response activities.

“Challenges such as limited diagnostic capacity and the spread of the illness to neighboring areas were highlighted, prompting a collaborative effort among government agencies and international partners”.

During discussions, Dr. Idris stressed the urgency of the situation and the need for a definitive diagnosis. Assurances were made regarding the swift collaboration with sister agencies to ascertain the nature of the illness, with results expected imminently.

Witnessing the recovery of patients firsthand at treatment facilities provided Dr. Idris with valuable insights into ongoing treatment protocols and the resilience of affected individuals, reinforcing the importance of effective intervention strategies.
Beyond technical aspects, Dr. Idris engaged with traditional leaders, including a visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, where he briefed His Highness on mission objectives.

The Sultan lauded NCDC’s efforts, pledging unwavering support from the people of Sokoto in battling the outbreak.

As the situation evolves, NCDC reiterates the need for continued vigilance and cooperation to identify the illness, implement containment measures, and prevent further outbreaks.

“Public awareness campaigns and adherence to safety protocols are crucial in mitigating disease spread”.

The collaborative efforts between government agencies, healthcare providers, and international partners underscore a unified commitment to safeguarding health in Sokoto State and beyond, reflecting Nigeria’s dedication to public health security.
