Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to arrive in the United States later Monday for a four-day visit that has gained added significance following the recent White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting and rising tensions between the two long-time allies.

The high-profile state visit, one of the most consequential of Charles’s reign, coincides with the 250th anniversary of America’s declaration of independence from British rule and marks the first trip to the U.S. by a British monarch in two decades.

The visit will begin with a private meeting with President Donald Trump, who has openly expressed admiration for the royal family. It will also feature an address to Congress and a formal state dinner at the White House. However, the carefully planned trip has been overshadowed by diplomatic strain linked to the U.S.-Israeli conflict involving Iran, with Trump criticising the British government for not backing the offensive.

The situation has been further complicated by Saturday’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, which officials say may have targeted the president and members of his administration.

Despite these developments, Buckingham Palace confirmed the visit will proceed as scheduled after consultations between British and U.S. authorities.

A palace spokesperson said the king and queen appreciate the swift efforts made to ensure the trip goes ahead and are looking forward to its commencement.

During their stay, the royal couple will meet privately with Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. King Charles, 77, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, is also scheduled to address Congress—only the second time a British monarch has done so. The visit will continue in New York, where they will honour victims of the September 11 attacks ahead of the 25th anniversary. Queen Camilla will also mark 100 years of the beloved Winnie-the-Pooh stories. The trip will conclude in Virginia, where the king will engage with environmental conservation efforts, reflecting his decades-long advocacy in that field.
