President Tinubu Holds Talks With Makinde On Governance Matters

0

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, received in audience the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, in a courtesy visit at the State House, Abuja.

Speaking to State House Correspondents after the meeting, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said his meeting with the President was premised on national and subnational governance issues.

Makinde added that none of his previous remarks indicated any strain in his relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasising that his engagement with the President was driven by matters of governance rather than partisan considerations.

“The President is the President of Nigeria, not the President of APC, and we’re talking about governance here. So I came to discuss with the President on some governance issues, basically,” Makinde said.

Addressing journalists on whether his visit indicated a closer alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Makinde said ideological differences had never amounted to animosity or impeded constructive engagement.

“There’s nothing that I’ve said in the past that says we’re not enjoying a harmonious relationship. Politics is politics. We belong to different political parties, but Nigeria is a project that all Nigerians must be concerned about,” he said.

He outlined insecurity, poverty alleviation and citizens’ welfare as issues that transcend party lines, noting that leaders at all levels must collaborate to improve the lives of Nigerians.

“These are things that have no coloration of a party. As leaders, whether President or governor, those are things we have to work together on, consult with one another, and ensure that we can make life better for our people,” the governor added.

Makinde further dismissed defection rumours to the All Progressives Congress Party, reaffirming his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While acknowledging that some national challenges demand bipartisan collaboration, the Oyo State Governor said he remains firmly rooted and comfortable within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“There are times when you need everybody on board to take the best step forward in the interest of our nation,” he said.

Albania, Bulgaria to Join Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’

0

Albanian lawmakers on Thursday approved a government decision to join the “Board of Peace” initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump to resolve global conflicts.

Prime Minister Edi Rama called the move “an act of goodwill” and “a special honour”, saying it would strengthen Albania’s role on the international stage.

The legislation passed with support from 110 of the 140 deputies, and Rama argued that joining the initiative ensures Albania remains “at the table” in global diplomacy, referring to the statement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Davos.

Neighbouring Kosovo, a close ally with the U.S. which supported its independence from Serbia in 2008, also joined the Board of Peace.

Bulgaria’s outgoing government has joined the treaty, a decision the parliament is expected to ratify next week.

Diplomat Nikolay Mladenov, a former UN envoy, has been elected as the High Representative for Gaza at the board.

Bulgaria and Hungary are the only EU members that have joined the Board of Peace so far.

Lawmakers Decry Non Appearance Of Disco Heads

The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee investigating Nigeria’s power sector reforms and expenditure from 2007 to 2024 has summoned the the Managing Directors of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and Jos Electricity Distribution Company over their absence at a hearing to probe their operations.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Al-Mustapha Ibrahim, expressed strong dissatisfaction during an hearing in Abuja.

He stressed that the absence of the Discos’ chief executives undermined the purpose of the investigation.

According to him, “The committee was constituted to address Nigeria’s persistent power challenges, which have continued to slow national development despite over a decade of power sector privatisation.

“There is no way we can move forward without hearing directly from the Managing Directors,” Ibrahim said. “We want them to tell Nigerians who they are, what they do, the investments they have made, and how they have utilised the various government interventions in the power sector,” Mr. Ibrahim said.

He noted that while generation and transmission issues have been interrogated in previous sessions, distribution companies remain critical stakeholders whose performance directly affects electricity supply to consumers.

The chairman recalled submissions from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which revealed that Nigeria has never generated up to 13,300 megawatts of electricity at any time, with peak generation hovering around 10,000 megawatts, despite transmission capacity of about 7,000 megawatts.

“The big question is why Nigerians are still in darkness.

“Discos must explain why communities and individuals are still forced to buy transformers and other infrastructure that should ordinarily be their responsibility,” Ibrahim said.

During the hearing, officials who appeared on behalf of the Discos could not provide convincing explanations for the absence of their Managing Directors, nor present letters formally notifying the committee of any delegation.

Members of the committee unanimously rejected the representation and insisted that only the Managing Directors could adequately address the issues raised.

Following deliberations, Mr. Olajide Mohammed moved a motion for the meeting to be adjourned to 5th February, directing the Discos to reappear with their Managing Directors to defend their submissions and explain their investment records, infrastructure development, and utilisation of intervention funds.

“We want to hear from the horse’s mouth. Nigerians are suffering across the country, and this is not an issue we can continue to treat lightly,” he said.

The motion was amended by Mr. Abubakar Jajere (Yobe State), who called for the invitation of core investors in the Discos, citing what he described as a pattern of disregard for the committee’s summons.

“We have already set a precedent that agencies invited must be represented by their chief executives.

“If the Discos continue to respond negatively, then we should invite their core investors. That way, accountability will be enforced,” Jajere said

The chairman upheld the amended motion, warning that failure to comply with the committee’s directive would attract the full instrumentality of the House.

“If they continue to evade this investigation, it raises serious questions about their capacity, commitment, and ability to deliver effective power supply after 13 years of privatisation,” Ibrahim said.

The committee adjourned proceedings to 5th February, reaffirming its resolve to uncover the root causes of Nigeria’s electricity crisis and ensure accountability in the power sector.

President Tinubu Tasks FCC Leadership on Fairness, National Unity

0

President Bola Tinubu has charged the newly sworn-in Chairman and Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) to uphold fairness, diligence and patriotism in the discharge of their constitutional mandate, describing their assignment as central to Nigeria’s unity and stability.

Speaking after administering the oath of office, the President told the new leadership that the Commission represents the conscience of the nation and must reflect Nigeria’s diversity and complexity in all its actions.

He stressed that their responsibility is to promote equity in public service appointments and ensure that every section of the country feels a sense of belonging.

“What you represent here today is the conscience of our nation. What you are being assigned to do is to promote and stabilise the conscience of this country, to be fair, diligent, committed and patriotic, a nation that needs its own people, has no good faith that we have that is better than our people.”

President Tinubu affirmed that Nigeria possesses the human resources, capacity and divine endowment required to build a strong and prosperous nation, urging the commissioners to see their appointment as a call to service rather than personal privilege.

He challenged the newly inaugurated commissioners to constantly examine their individual contributions to national development, growth and unity, noting that the country’s progress depends largely on the commitment of its own people.

“We have the human resources, we have the ability, the capacity and the endowment from God to build our country. We must, at each time, ask ourselves, what is our contribution to the development and growth, stability and unity of this country? If I can borrow from John F Kennedy, who asked the Americans, and I’m asking you to ask yourself, not all the time.

“What can this country do for you, but what you can do for the country to make it greater now that you have been inaugurated, to reflect the federal character, the complexity, the diversity of this country. It’s only your hand.”

The President added that the success of the Federal Character Commission in promoting inclusiveness and fairness rests squarely in their hands, adding that their conduct in office must strengthen national cohesion and public confidence in government institutions.

Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated leadership of the Commission, Hon. Ayo Haulat, expressed confidence that by the end of the current administration, every Nigerian will own Nigeria.

Omidiran noted that Nigeria is endowed with abundant resources and opportunities, stressing that such benefits must be fairly distributed to all parts of the country in order to promote inclusivity and national cohesion.

“As you are aware, the federal character commission was formed by patriotic Nigerians who believe that there should be a body to ensure equitable distribution of every good thing.

“And Nigeria has good things in abundance, but it must go round every nook and cranny of Nigeria to engender inclusivity, so that everybody will know that Nigeria is theirs and they will own the country.”

Speaking on the mandate of the Commission, the FCC Chairman noted that the Federal Character Commission was established by patriotic Nigerians to ensure the equitable distribution of national opportunities and resources across the federation.

She pledged that the Commission would leverage Nigeria’s diversity as a source of strength, while working to renew the hope and aspirations of Nigerians through transparent and balanced representation in public institutions.

The FCC Chairman further affirmed that the Commission would carry out its duties under the guidance of President Tinubu, ensuring that its operations contribute to national unity, stability and confidence in government processes.

Omidiran highlighted that the Commission will ensure that national assets cuts across all the region of the country thereby reinforcing citizens’ confidence that Nigeria belongs to all, regardless of ethnic, religious or regional differences.

“At the end of this tenure, every Nigerian will own Nigeria. “So what Mr. President told us is just to remind us of what the Act has mandated us to do, and we are fully ready to do.”

The FCC Chairman expressed optimism that, with commitment and dedication, the Commission would fulfil its responsibilities and contribute to strengthening unity and fairness in the country.

APC Commends Delta State Governor on Infrastructure Delivery

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori’s leadership, saying his administration is delivering much-needed infrastructure across Delta State, southern Nigeria .

“Governor Oborevwori is making significant strides,” APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Felix Morka, in a statement, said, adding that Governor Oborevwori broke ground on the Uromi-Junction Flyover in Agbor, Ika South.

Mr. Morka also noted that “The project was awarded to Julius Berger in the sum of N59.7 Billion with an expected delivery timeline of 14 months.”

The National Publicity Secretary said the Governor’s move ends years of deadly accidents at the “hazardous interchange.”

“Although the people of Agbor are the immediate beneficiaries of this massive and life-saving development intervention, the flyover inures to the benefit of all Nigerians as it stands at a crucial intersection of major connector roads to the East, West, North and South-South of Nigeria.

Not only will the flyover boost economic activity in the area, it will ease travel, decongest persistent traffic gridlock, drastically improve security and promote the overall wellbeing of travelers and residents alike.” Mr. Morka emphasised.

The party further said “The Agbor ceremony came barely one week after the Governor performed another ground-breaking ceremony of the N39.3 Billion Otovwodo Junction Flyover in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area.

Other Flyovers at PTI Junction, DSC Roundabout, Enerhen Junction make it five Flyovers that are now under construction across Delta state as part of the Governor’s determined effort to expand critical urban infrastructure and improve the quality of lives of the people of Delta state.”

Mr. Morka further said Governor Oborevwori administration’s MORE Agenda is focusing on Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security is yielding results.

“From clearing backlogs of pensions and gratuities to investments in human capital development to payment of monthly stipends to 10,000 widows, to collaboration with Bank of Industry to recapitalize micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The Governor’s development footprint also extends to vastly improved funding for tertiary educational institutions and acquisition of advanced imaging and diagnostic equipment for hospitals in the state.” Mr. Morka highlighted.

The party noted that Governor Oborevwori publicly backs President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, crediting the president’s economic reforms for Delta’s improved finances.

‘ In April 2025, Governor Oborevwori blazed the trail when he led the entire structure of the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state into our great Party, a move that has inspired several other former opposition Governors to join our Party in support of President Tinubu’s bold, unprecedented and transformative economic reforms that have brought our country closer to a new epoch of economic boom and lasting prosperity.”

The APC applauds Governor Oborevwori for aligning state resources with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “We urge him to keep uplifting Deltans’ living conditions,” the party said.

NICN Orders FCTA Joint Union to Halt Strike

0

The National Industrial Court (NICN) in Abuja has issued an Order of Interlocutory Injunction, prohibiting the leaders of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), workers’ union, their agents, and members from embarking on strikes, picketing, lockouts, road blockades, or any action aimed at shutting down the administration’s activities.

This ruling comes after workers under the aegis of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) embarked on an indefinite strike over the non-payment of promotion arrears and other entitlements on Monday.

In a ruling on Thursday, January 21, 2026, Honourable Justice E. D. Subilim granted an application filed by the Minister of the FCT and the FCTA, restraining the union officials from proceeding with the industrial action.

The defendants, Rifkatu Iortyer and Abdullahi Umar Saleh, identified as President and Secretary of the Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC) were not present in court.

The FCTA’s legal team, led by Dr Ogwu J. Onoja, SAN, argued that the proposed strike was illegal and would paralyse the administration’s operations.

Justice Subilim held that the applicants had established a case warranting judicial intervention.

The court consequently issued the injunction, restraining the union and its members from any action that would cripple FCTA activities. Due to the defendants’ absence, the court also approved substituted service of the legal documents.

It ordered that the Originating Summons, which challenges the strike’s legality, be published in a national newspaper and posted at the committee’s office at the FCTA Secretariat on Kapital Street, Area 11, Garki, Abuja.

The summons raises fundamental legal questions, challenging whether the strike was called in compliance with the Trade Disputes Act and contesting the legal status of the Joint Unions Action Committee, which is not a registered trade union.

The case has been adjourned to Monday, January 26, 2026, for a hearing of the Motion on Notice.

The ruling is a pre-emptive move by the FCTA to avert operational disruption and compels the union to justify its actions within the legal framework.

When contacted, one of the union leaders, who preferred anonymity said, “Since the administration wants us to continue our agitation in court, we will go to court to defend our actions.”

South Africa Evaluates Flood Damage on National Park

0

The level of damage from severe floods in South Africa’s flagship game reserve Kruger National Park will take years to repair and cost millions of dollars, the environment minister said on Thursday.

South African authorities temporarily closed the park last week after several rivers that run through it burst their banks as a result of heavy rains. The park is one of South Africa’s main draws for local and foreign tourists.

Fifteen tourist camps are still closed, with some completely inaccessible, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment Willie Aucamp said.

Hundreds of people had been evacuated, and no lives were lost.

The damage is still being assessed, but repairs are estimated to cost more than 500 million rand ($30 million).

The recent floods that we’ve experienced have had a devastating effect on the park,” Aucamp said “The indication is that it will take as long as five years to repair all the bridges and roads and other infrastructure.”

Reuters journalists reached the park last week, finding bridges completely submerged under rushing water, with hippos seen swimming among treetops.

Park officials have said they are not too worried about the fate of animals that instinctively move to high ground to escape the floods, although they have warned people living nearby to be careful about crocodiles swept beyond their usual habitats.

Flooding in southeastern Africa has become more frequent and severe as climate change makes storms in the adjacent Indian Ocean more powerful.

Neighbouring Mozambique is also facing devastating floods that have forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes in recent days.

Nigeria-US Security Partnership Yields Counter-Terrorism Success – NSA

0

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has declared that the nation’s security partnership with the United States has moved decisively beyond dialogue into measurable operational impact, with counter-terrorism cooperation now delivering tangible results across multiple theatres of operation.

He made the assertion on Thursday while delivering opening remarks at a Nigeria–United States Working Group engagement in Abuja.

Ribadu described the meeting as the third high-level engagement with senior U.S. government officials since November 2025, noting that the engagements reflect a maturing strategic relationship grounded in trust, candour, and shared responsibility.

He stressed that Nigeria views the Working Group as a practical problem-solving platform rather than a compliance mechanism, aimed at aligning priorities, addressing concerns, and consolidating gains already recorded.

According to Mallam Ribadu, intensified cooperation since November has translated into enhanced intelligence sharing, closer coordination between U.S. AFRICOM and Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, and improved operational effectiveness across the North East under Operation HADIN KAI, as well as the North West and North Central under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

“These engagements have moved decisively beyond dialogue to action,” he said.

He added that the collaboration has strengthened target identification, joint planning, and operational fidelity, resulting in the neutralisation of hundreds of terrorists, the destruction of logistics hubs, and the interception of key facilitators and logisticians.

Ribadu also acknowledged U.S. commitments towards the delivery of outstanding military platforms, including drones, helicopters, spare parts, and support systems, as well as the provision of surplus defence equipment, noting that all cooperation has respected Nigeria’s sovereignty and prioritised civilian protection.

At the national level, the NSA said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken deliberate steps to confront insecurity, including declaring security emergencies in vulnerable areas, authorising intensified joint operations, and directing sustained deployments to communities facing recurrent attacks on civilians and religious groups.

He disclosed that Nigeria is expanding early-warning and rapid-response mechanisms and developing a national database to serve as a single authoritative source of verifiable data on deaths and casualties arising from violence, to strengthen accountability and evidence-based decision-making.

Mallam Ribadu emphasised that Nigeria’s plural identity makes the protection of Christians, Muslims, and citizens of all beliefs non-negotiable, adding that violence framed along religious lines is treated as an attack on the Nigerian state itself.

“Violence framed along religious lines is treated as an attack on the Nigerian state itself,” he said.

He urged that Nigeria’s security efforts be assessed based on institutional capacity, direction of travel, and decisions taken at the highest level, rather than isolated incidents within a complex operating environment.

Beyond security, Ribadu noted that Nigeria–U.S. relations also encompass democratic resilience, the rule of law, and regional stability, warning against extremist and malign actors exploiting governance gaps.

The NSA welcomed frank dialogue at the Working Group and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to delivering credible security, justice, and lasting protection for all communities, while expressing appreciation to U.S. leadership, congressional delegations, and the U.S. Mission in Nigeria for sustained engagement.

The United States Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, while delivering her address during the U.S.–Nigeria Working Group, urged Nigeria to take stronger and sustained action to protect communities, as both countries deepen security cooperation against terrorism and insecurity.

The Under Secretary said advancing religious freedom and security would strengthen broader bilateral cooperation, including economic partnerships, counter-terrorism efforts, and public health collaboration.

Hooker recalled that on 31 October 2025, the United States designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, noting that the decision had since led to closer cooperation aimed at protecting vulnerable communities across the country.

She said the U.S.–Nigeria partnership remains grounded in shared interests spanning trade, investment, energy, security, and regional stability, stressing that religious freedom is now a central pillar of that engagement.

“Today, we are here to discuss how we can work together to deter violence against Christian communities; prioritising countering terrorism and insecurity; investigating attacks and holding perpetrators accountable,” she said.

Hooker acknowledged Nigeria’s cooperation in degrading terrorist capabilities, including coordinated airstrikes carried out on 25 December, which she said were closely planned with Nigerian authorities.

She pointed to recent developments as evidence of progress, including the recruitment of 20,000 additional police officers for deployment to vulnerable areas, the arraignment of suspects linked to a June massacre in Benue State, and the arrest of individuals allegedly fleeing Sokoto State following December operations.

“This real progress is a direct result of our engagement with the Nigerian government,” she said.

She urged local government authorities to work closely with non-governmental organisations to support victims’ families and communities affected by attacks.

Hooker added that discussions would also focus on returning internally displaced persons to their communities in North Central states, disrupting terrorist financing and arms flows, and ensuring accountability through expanded investigations and prosecutions.

“I look forward to seeing Nigeria take active, sustained steps to promote and protect freedom of religion or belief for all and to turn the tide on insecurity and terrorism,” she said.
