President Tinubu Commends Super Eagles for AFCON Bronze Victory

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, for putting behind them the disappointment of their semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco and securing a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The President in a congratulatory message issued on Saturday described the team’s third-place finish, achieved against Egypt, as a reflection of resilience, determination and the enduring fighting spirit of Nigerian football.

President Tinubu stated that the Super Eagles players, through their victory, have once again demonstrated the determination, persistence, and can-do spirit associated with our country.

The President further stated in his remarked that despite the Super Eagles good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and Nigerians’ hopes of winning the championship were dashed.

“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.

“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.

“”Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold,” The President added.

The Super Eagles overpowered Egypt, defeating the seven-time AFCON winner, in a penalty shootout after the regular time, in which the Nigerian team dominated.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, has described Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) bronze medal win, as a product of collective effort after his penalty saves sealed victory over Egypt.

Nwabali was named Man of the Match, after saving two penalties in Nigeria’s 4–2 shootout win over Egypt. The AFCON 2025 third-place play-off ended goalless in regulation time, before penalties decided the bronze medal.

The Nigerian shot-stopper described the encounter as tense, with both teams determined to avoid costly errors.

“It was a very difficult match against a great Egyptian team; Nobody wanted to make a mistake,” Nwabali said. “I stayed calm, read the takers and trusted my instincts; Thankfully, it worked for us.”

“This victory came from collective effort. The defenders were incredible, and everyone stayed united. Being Man of the Match feels good, but winning the bronze medal for Nigeria matters more.”

The goalkeeper praised the team’s resilience after earlier disappointment in the tournament.

“We had setbacks, but we stayed focused and believed in ourselves until the end,” Nwabali added.

Nigeria finished AFCON Morocco 2025, on the podium, with Nwabali’s heroics proving decisive.

Djokovic Downplays Pressure Ahead Of Australian Open Quest

0

If Novak Djokovic is feeling any pressure to win a record 25th Grand Slam at the Australian Open, the 38-year-old Serbian star certainly isn’t showing it.

Djokovic has been stuck on 24 major victories since winning the 2023 US Open, with young stars Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner combining to win the last eight Grand Slam events.

Djokovic is quite aware he’s no longer the face of men’s tennis, but it’s not as if he is fading into the background. Last year, he reached the semifinals in all four majors.

“We don’t need to praise them too much,” Djokovic told the media. “They have been praised enough!.”

“We know how good they are, and they absolutely deserve to be where they are. They are the dominant forces of men’s tennis at the moment.”

As one of the grizzled veterans on the ATP circuit, Djokovic is more interested in reflecting on his career achievements rather than all the chatter around him potentially setting the all-time record for Grand Slam titles.

“There has been a lot of talk about the 25th, but I try to focus myself on what I have achieved, not what I’m possibly achieving,” the fourth-seeded Djokovic said.

“I hope it comes to that (winning 25), but 24 is also not a bad number. I have to appreciate that and remind myself of the amazing career I had.”

Djokovic has a record 10 titles at the Australian Open, and begins his pursuit of No. 11 on Monday night against Spain’s Pedro Martinez at Rod Laver Arena. If he does win the title in Melbourne, he will become the oldest Grand Slam men’s champion in the Open Era.

Ken Rosewall of Australia was 37 when he won the 1972 Aussie Open.

“I don’t think it’s needed for me to really go far in terms of make-it-or-break-it or a now-or-never type of mentality,” Djokovic said. “Neither does that allow me to excel and perform my best.”

Nigeria, IITA Sign MOU on Fertilizer, Soil Health

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to improve soil health, enhance fertilizer efficiency and revolutionize the agricultural ecosystem.

Speaking during the Signing of MOU Ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari said the initiative was part of a broader strategy to transform soil management practices.

He said it would also increase agricultural productively, and ultimately achieve food sovereignty for the nation and also part of the presidential soil health scheme.

Senator Abubakar Kyari stated that the Agreement would provide farmers with data driven recommendations for fertilizer use and crop selection, which can help optimize yields and reduce costs.

“The collaboration would also focus on improving land management and climate services, building national expertise, and creating a model for regional cooperation,” he said.

The Minister stressed that both parties would work together to tackle issues such as soil nutrient depletion ,erosion, and climate change effects using advanced technologies.

’Beyond food availability and affordability, the government was committed to ensuring nutritional quality and safety, If the soil is not healthy, no matter the effort, the desired results cannot be achieved,” he said.

In his remarks, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi said that ‘’the purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to articulate the understanding and willingness of the Parties (the ministry and IITA) to evaluate the benefits of their collaboration, facilitating any joint preliminary study and due diligence related to the proposed partnership, while also delineating the general intentions of the Parties regarding such collaboration. This MoU does not impose any legal obligations on either Party concerning the proposed collaboration’’.

He noted that ‘’this MoU is anchored on three fundamental objectives, which are to Strengthen Agricultural Land Management and Climate Change Services with emphasis on Soil Health and Fertilizer Management in Nigeria, Build National Capacity through applied research, soil fertility practice management data systems, and policy support and Promote a model of collaboration that can inspire and inform similar efforts across the ECOWAS region.

‘’This scheme is designed to remove guesswork for Nigerian farmers by giving them facts, what to plant, where to plant, and the type of fertilizer required for each soil type”

He explained that laboratories would be sited across the local government areas, which will enable farmers to submit soil samples for analysis and receive recommendations similar to medical laboratory tests.

Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi revealed that ‘’since the inauguration of Mr. President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, he has made agriculture a top priority in Nigeria through the Renewed Hope for Food Security and Sovereignty initiative.

‘’This commitment goes beyond mere political rhetoric; it is a serious mandate that Mr. President has embraced with full dedication, including mobilizing both local and international support to ensure food availability for all citizens in the nation’’, he added.

Strong Collaboration/Multi-faceted partnership

He lauded the IITA for their strong collaboration and multi-faceted partnership with Nigeria over the years focusing on transforming our agriculture for food security and economic growth through research, innovation, capacity building and technology transfer targeting climate resilience, data-driven farming and youth/women empowerment.

During his welcome address, the Director – General, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Dr Simeon Ehui, said that the agreement would support the Nigeria Farmers’ Soil Health Scheme (NFSHS) and the continued development of the Nigerian National Soil Information System (NNSIS)

Dr. Ehui stated that the partnership as a policy and delivery commitment is designed to provide farmers with data-driven, location-specific recommendations rather than “generalised messages”.

He revealed that implementation would be channelled through the Regional Hub of Fertilizer and Soil Health for West Africa and the Sahel, hosted by IITA, to ensure coordination, common standards, and shared learning across countries.

“This approach assures a standards-based system rather than isolated interventions, while allowing Nigeria to benefit from regional expertise,”

He emphasised that the initiative would deliver crop and location-specific fertilizer recommendations for key staples such as rice, maize, sorghum, wheat and yam alongside integrated soil fertility management, improved laboratory standards, digital soil information systems and capacity building.

Provide Research

He stated that IITA would provide research and technical expertise, training, soil testing support, and monitoring frameworks to ensure measurable outcomes.

“The real test of this MoU will be results-improved soil health systems, higher fertilizer use efficiency, stronger national capacity and accelerated progress towards food security,” he added.

The highlight of the event was the signing of MoU by the officials of the ministry and IITA.

Nigeria Beats Egypt On Penalties, Claims AFCON Bronze

0

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged hero for Nigeria as the Super Eagles secured the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following a 4–2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt after goalless draw in regulation time.

Egypt fashioned the first meaningful opportunity at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, when Mohamed Salah slipped a perfectly weighted pass through to Mahmoud Trezeguet Hassan, but Nwabali was quick off his line to smother the danger.

Salah then went close with two near-post efforts in quick succession. His first attempt, a deft flick from Mohamed Hany’s cross, was blocked by Nwabali, while the follow-up deflected off Semi Ajayi for a corner.

Nigeria thought they had broken the deadlock 10 minutes before the interval when Adams headed home from close range, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review, with Paul Onuachu adjudged to have fouled Hamdi Fathy in the build-up.

The Super Eagles had another goal chalked off just seconds into the second half, as substitute Lookman was flagged offside before finishing clinically.

Nigeria continued to probe, with efforts from Raphael Onyedika and stand-in captain Simon from distance, though both attempts were comfortably handled by Egypt goalkeeper Shobeir.

With neither side able to find a breakthrough in 90 minutes, the contest was decided from the spot — where Nigeria held their nerve and Nwabali proved decisive.

Nigeria’s shootout did not begin smoothly, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru seeing his effort saved by Egypt goalkeeper Ouba Shobeir. But Nwabali quickly restored momentum with consecutive saves from Salah and Marmoush.

Calm finishes from Akor Adams, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman sealed the victory and confirmed Nigeria’s bronze medal finish.

The penalty shootout belonged to Nwabali. The Nigeria shot-stopper produced two outstanding saves to deny Egypt’s star men Salah and forward Marmoush — turning the contest firmly in Nigeria’s favour.

Nigeria depart Morocco with a bronze medal and renewed belief, while Egypt are left to reflect after falling just short in a tightly fought campaign.

Eric Chelle’s side showed strong character to bounce back from their semi-final disappointment against hosts Morocco earlier in the week, in the same fashion, ensuring they concluded their campaign positively with a place on the podium.

“It would have been difficult for me to continue as Niggeria’s head coach if we had lost this game,” Chelle said.

“I’m proud of my players. This is so good right now.”

The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has launched the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RHWDP) in the state, a non-partisan socio economic initiative of President Bola Tinubu to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

A total of 193,000 Kwarans are to benefit from the initiative from across the 193 wards in the state.

The Governor said the programme attests to the President’s love for the less privileged and his government’s dedication to achieve the $1 trillion dollar economy by 2030.

He said the initiative aligns with the state’s social investment programme which his government introduced to empower the aged, downtrodden, and small-scale businesses.

He thanked the President for his various support to Kwara and how he entrusted him with the task of chairing the National Steering Committee for the programme.

State Coordinator for RHWDP, Mubarak Salau Bello, said the scheme is designed to take development and economic growth directly to the grassroots and make national growth a reality for every Nigerian, right from the ward level.

Bello said that they organised the stakeholders’ engagement to ensure robust enumeration, identify gaps, process feedback from citizens and enhance inclusion in the enrollment exercise.

He praised President Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq for impacting lives of the masses through poverty alleviation programmes, inclusive governance, and sustainable development at the grassroots.

Chairman, Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, Abdullateef Gidado Alakawa, said RHWDP is not partisan in nature but targeted at people at the grassroot level.

Alakawa, who took the participants through some of the pro-masses programmes and projects of the administration, both at federal and state levels, said APC government means well for Nigerians and deserves their continued support.

The Chairman, Kwara State Sports Commission, Coach Bola Magaji, acknowledged the Governor’s exceptional support for sport and youth development in the state, saying that there are numerous sport facilities the administration has revived to the best standard.

Speaking on behalf of community based organisations in the state, Kadir Rasheed Ajao promised to support the government in making sure that the programme benefits the right people.

State Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Mallam Ali Nasim-Yusuf, said Kwara youth have no reason to not support the President and the Governor, given the various youth-friendly programmes of the federal and state governments.

Ugandan Museveni Leads in Tense Election

0

Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the country for 40 years, had  lead in a tense presidential election marred by an internet shutdown, voting delays and opposition allegations of “massive ballot stuffing” and detentions by security forces.

According to the national electoral commission, provisional results from more than half of the polling stations so far, showed Museveni with more than 75% of the vote while his main challenger Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the musician-turned-opposition leader best known as Bobi Wine, had around 20%.

Activists protesting against the election results so far lit bonfires in the capital, Kampala, as the provisional results were being announced.

The 81-year-old Museveni has served the third-longest tenure of any African leader and is seeking to extend his rule into a fifth decade.

The aging president’s authority has become increasingly dependent on the military, which is led by his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Wine, who is calling for political change, said that his polling agents in rural areas were abducted before the voting started, undermining his efforts to prevent alleged electoral offenses such as ballot stuffing.

Wine was hoping to end Museveni’s four-decade rule in an election during which the military was deployed and heavy security was posted outside Wine’s house near Kampala, the Ugandan capital, after the vote.

Several reports allege that Bobi Wine had been taken in custody after a helicopter landed at his home on Friday.

The police refuted the claims saying they were not aware of such instances and that they have not arrested Bobi Wine.

A police spokesman suggested heavy security deployment around Wine’s home was for his own security.

The police  spokesman said several people were killed and others were injured in a violent incident in central Uganda that involved supporters of two parliamentary candidates.

The security forces were a constant presence throughout the election campaign, and Wine said authorities followed him and harassed his supporters, using tear gas against them.

He campaigned in a flak jacket and helmet due to his security fears.

Uganda has not witnessed a peaceful transfer of presidential power since independence from British colonial rule in 1962.
