China has handed over the ECOWAS Headquarters building it constructed in Abuja as a landmark symbol of friendship, regional cooperation, and shared development with West Africa.

The architectural masterpiece already hailed as the “Eye of West Africa.” Standing at the heart of regional diplomacy, the modern complex symbolises not only infrastructure development but also decades of enduring partnership.

The commemorative key, formally presented to President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray marks a historic milestone in China–ECOWAS relations.

Speaking, on a Partnership Built on Trust, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Yu Dunhai, stressed that since the establishment of formal ties in the 1990s, China and ECOWAS have cultivated a relationship grounded in mutual respect, equality, and win-win cooperation.

Strenthen Political Trust

Over the years, both sides have strengthened political trust and expanded collaboration across multiple sectors.

Political mutual trust remains the cornerstone of our relationship. China firmly supports ECOWAS in pursuing a development path suited to its regional realities. From high-level diplomatic exchanges to coordinated positions on global issues such as climate change and food security, the partnership has matured into a model of South-South cooperation.

Driving Development Through Practical Cooperation Economic and technical cooperation continues to be the engine of this partnership. From infrastructure projects to emerging sectors like green energy and digital innovation, China’s engagement has contributed significantly to development across West Africa,” Dunhai explained.

According to the Ambassador, a major milestone comes with China’s recent policy announcement: “Starting May 1, zero-tariff treatment will be extended to 53 African countries. This will unlock unprecedented access for West African products to the Chinese market.

Chinese agricultural experts and technical teams are also playing a crucial role in boosting food security, introducing high-yield farming techniques and sustainable irrigation systems.

On peace, security, and stability, the Envoy noted that peace and stability remain vital for sustainable development. China has consistently supported ECOWAS in strengthening regional security mechanisms.

Development is the foundation of lasting peace. By improving livelihoods and creating opportunities, we address the root causes of instability. China’s contributions to UN peacekeeping missions in countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire further underscore its commitment to regional stability,” he said.

People ro People Ties

Strengthening People-to-People Ties, the Ambassador, said  beyond government and economic cooperation, cultural and educational exchanges have brought the people of China and West Africa closer together.

He said, “the friendship between our peoples is the deepest foundation of our cooperation. It is in classrooms, hospitals, and cultural exchanges that this bond truly comes alive. Thousands of West African students have benefited from scholarships in China, while Chinese medical teams have supported healthcare systems across the region, including during crises like Ebola and COVID-19.”

Looking Ahead towards a  Shared Future, Yu Dunhai noted that as global dynamics evolve and African integration accelerates, China–ECOWAS relations are poised for even greater growth.

“Looking forward, the cooperation will focus on four key pillars: deepening political trust, enhancing economic collaboration, strengthening security partnerships, and expanding cultural exchanges. The roots of our friendship run deep. Together, we will ensure that this partnership continues to flourish, delivering prosperity and opportunity for future generations,” he stated.

The handover of the ECOWAS Headquarters is not just a ceremonial event, it is a powerful reminder that when nations work together with mutual respect and shared purpose, they can build a future defined by growth, stability, and unity.
