Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are set to strengthen bilateral relations, with new developments in education, aviation, and media cooperation.
This was disclosed when Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, received the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Information and National Orientation.

Welcoming the Ambassador, the Minister described the visit as a clear demonstration of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to engaging Nigeria at a deeper level.
“You chose this office as one of your first points of contact even before presenting your letter of credence, and you have returned again after that process. This underscores the importance you attach to this ministry as a gateway to the Nigerian people,” Idris said.
According to the Information Minister, the diplomatic ties between both nations date back to 1961 and have continued to grow across sectors such as trade, tourism, and religious engagements.
“The relationship between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia is a very deep one. We have seen cooperation in commerce, in tourism, especially religious visits such as Hajj and Umrah, and in human capacity development”, he said
The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s demographic and economic significance, noting that the country remains a key partner for Saudi Arabia in Africa.
“Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa. There is a saying that one in every four Black people in the world is Nigerian. For you to be posted here at this time speaks volumes about the importance of this relationship, which we are committed to nurturing,” he noted .
A major outcome of the meeting was the announcement of a scholarship programme for Nigerian students in Saudi Arabia. According to Idris, the initiative will provide annual postgraduate opportunities for 50 Nigerians in petroleum and mineral studies.
“This is not just about grants or aid, this is a real investment in human capital development—an area that is critical as Nigeria continues to diversify into solid minerals and strengthen its oil, gas and solid minerals sector”,
Resumption of Direct Flights
Idris, also revealed ongoing plans for the resumption of direct flights between Abuja and Saudi Arabia, describing it as a development that would boost economic activities and people-to-people connections.
“Direct air connectivity will further enhance trade, tourism, and bilateral exchanges between our two countries,” he noted.
The Minister also disclosed that three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the two countries, particularly in the areas of broadcasting and media collaboration, are awaiting final “These agreements will strengthen cooperation between institutions such as the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and the Nigerian Television Authority with their Saudi counterparts,” he said.
Idris assured the Ambassador of Nigeria’s readiness to sustain and expand the partnership.
“The Nigerian government remains fully committed to a mutually beneficial relationship that will continue to grow for the benefit of both countries,” he added.
Scholarships
Speaking earlier, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, Yousef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s support and reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to strengthening ties.
“This position reflects the strength of Saudi-Nigerian relations and is deeply appreciated by our leadership. Since my arrival, I have received strong support and respect from Nigerian officials”, he said.
Ambassador Al-Balawi, announced that 50 Nigerian students have been awarded scholarships to study in Saudi. According to him, the scholarship programme, facilitated by King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, will cover tuition, travel, accommodation, and stipends for beneficiaries.
“This initiative reflects a real partnership. It is not just aid, it is an investment in people and in the future of our two countries.”
He also emphasized ongoing efforts to expand cooperation in trade, investment, and education, noting that Nigeria remains one of the top beneficiaries of Saudi scholarship programmes globally.
“I am confident that our bilateral relations will continue to grow and prosper, We will keep working to increase opportunities for Nigerian students and deepen economic cooperation”, he added
Both parties reiterated their commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement, with expectations that the evolving partnership will deliver tangible benefits across multiple sectors.
