The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Agricultural Innovation Mechanism for Scale (AIM for Scale) to enhance the delivery of climate and weather information to farmers across Nigeria.

The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to integrate artificial intelligence into weather forecasting systems and strengthen digital advisory services.

The initiative is designed to translate accurate and timely climate data into practical guidance that will help farmers make informed decisions and reduce exposure to climate-related risks.

Under the agreement, both organizations will deploy AI-driven forecasting tools to generate weather insights tailored to the specific needs of farmers.

These insights will be converted into actionable advisories to support better planting decisions, improved input management, and enhanced resilience against extreme weather conditions, ultimately boosting agricultural productivity and livelihoods.

AIM for Scale, supported by the International Affairs Office at the UAE Presidential Court and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is focused on accelerating innovation in agriculture.

Through this partnership, it will work closely with NiMet to expand the reach and effectiveness of climate services by incorporating advanced data-driven tools into Nigeria’s existing systems.

Advancing Nigeria’s Weather and Climate Services

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony in Abuja, NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Charles Anosike, described the partnership as a major step forward in advancing Nigeria’s weather and climate services.

He noted that improved access to timely rainfall forecasts and actionable climate information would enable farmers to better plan planting and harvesting seasons while minimizing risks associated with unpredictable weather.

“Providing accurate and timely weather and climate information is essential for national development, food security, and disaster risk management,” he said.

Also speaking, the Director of AIM for Scale, Imara Salas, highlighted the transformative potential of AI-powered forecasting and digital advisory systems.

She stated that the initiative could significantly improve crop yields, promote efficient resource use, and strengthen the resilience of millions of smallholder farmers across Nigeria.

The partnership is expected to further strengthen NiMet’s capacity to deliver actionable climate services while advancing innovation in weather forecasting through the integration of artificial intelligence and modern data technologies.

NiMet, which plays a critical role in Nigeria’s agricultural and climate information ecosystem, currently provides early warning advisories, seasonal climate predictions, and digital climate services.

The new partnership is expected to build on this foundation by strengthening institutional capacity and improving how climate information is communicated to farmers nationwide.

Nigeria was also among the first countries to participate in the AI Weather Forecasting Training Programme launched in September 2025 by AIM for Scale, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, and the University of Chicago in Abu Dhabi.

The programme equips countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America with the tools and expertise to generate localized weather forecasts, ensuring that innovations reach farmers at the grassroots level.
