The Kano State Government, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organisation have reaffirmed their commitment to improving child and family health as they joined the rest of the continent to commemorate Africa Vaccination Week (AVW) 2026.
Speaking during a press briefing held on Tuesday at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in Kano State, State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, described immunisation as a critical pillar in safeguarding lives and securing the future of communities across the state.
The annual campaign, led by the UNICEF and WHO Regional Office for Africa, is themed “For every generation, vaccines work.” According to the commissioner, the theme underscores the enduring benefits of vaccines across all age groups while encouraging stronger routine immunisation systems.
Dr Yusuf noted that Kano is not only participating in the campaign but taking a leadership role through targeted interventions aimed at reaching children who have not received any vaccines, particularly those aged zero to 23 months.
He explained that the state is prioritising “zero-dose” children through intensified outreach and catch-up immunisation activities.
As part of the week-long activities, the state is rolling out an integrated healthcare service package across its facilities.
These services include deworming, antenatal care, family planning, nutrition screening, diarrhoea and malaria treatment, HIV counselling, and breastfeeding support.
The commissioner emphasised that this approach is designed to provide holistic care rather than isolated health services.
A major highlight of the commemoration is a statewide flag-off, rally, and health walk scheduled for April 28, 2026.
The event is expected to draw participation from traditional and religious leaders, as well as polio survivors, whose experiences will help strengthen public awareness and trust in vaccines.
To improve accountability and performance tracking, the government has also introduced a real-time data reporting system for all local government areas.
Developed with support from UNICEF and the World Health Organisation, the tool will monitor vaccine delivery, service coverage, and overall campaign impact.
Dr Yusuf expressed appreciation to development partners, including Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, WHO, and UNICEF, for their continued support.
“The state government, under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has matched this support with strong political will and domestic funding”, he said.
The commissioner called on local government chairmen to ensure community mobilisation and the safety of vaccination teams, while urging health workers and data personnel to carry out their duties with diligence and accuracy.
He also appealed to the media and community leaders to intensify advocacy efforts to boost public confidence in immunisation.
Dr Yusuf concluded by expressing optimism that the campaign would lead to improved vaccination coverage, stronger health systems, and increased awareness among residents.
