Tennis: McDonald Knocks Nadal Out Of Australian Open

0

Australian Open defending champion Rafael Nadal has been knocked out of the competition in the second round after suffering an injury during his 6-4 6-4 7-5 defeat by American Mackenzie McDonald.

Before the injury McDonald had played superbly to take the first set, going toe-to-toe with the 36-year-old Spaniard and winning most of the ferocious baseline exchanges.

Nadal appeared to suffer a strain in his left hip area while running for a backhand deep in the second set at the Rod Laver Arena and after receiving attention from a trainer, he took an off-court medical time-out when trailing 6-4 5-3.

The Spaniard returned to play out the match but his movement was clearly affected, particularly on his backhand side, paving the way for McDonald to take the second set.

Leaning heavily on serve and relying on touch, Nadal dragged McDonald deep into the third set but was finally broken to 6-5 when the American bolted forward to flick a passing shot past him.

Nadal attacked the net in a desperate last stand but to no avail as McDonald ended the Spaniard’s bid for a third title at Melbourne Park.

“He’s an incredible champion, he’s never going to give up regardless of the situation so even closing it out against a top guy like that is always tough,” said McDonald.

“I was trying to stay so focused on what I was doing and he kind of got me out of that with what he was doing. But I kind of just kept focusing on myself and got through. Last time I played him was at Chatrier, he kicked my butt.”

“It’s tough to hit through on clay but I liked my chances on hard, I really wanted to take it to him on hard court. I’m really glad I got my chance and got away with it.”

Nadal’s elimination shakes up the men’s draw and puts a twist in the Grand Slam title race, with nine-time champion Novak Djokovic able to draw level with the Spaniard’s 22 major championships should he take a 10th crown at Melbourne Park.

CHAN 2023: Algeria Becomes First Nation To Reach Quarter-Finals

0

Algeria became the first nation to reach the quart-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), after registering its second win of the competition with a hard fought 1-0 victory against over Ethiopia, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers, Algeria.

While Algeria had most of the possession in the opening minutes, they could not do much to hurt Ethiopia, who did well to keep them at bay and away from the dangerous positions. As a result, the hosts were forced to ask questions of the keeper from a distance.

The first attempt came from Algeria’s Ahmed Kendouci, who fired from a distance but found an equally alert Farid Chaal, who did well to make the save in the 21st minute.

In the second half, Algeria continued where they left off with their high pressing game and eventually broke the deadlock.

After a well taken corner was flicked by Chouhaib Keddad, the ball fell to Aimen Mahious, who did well to control the ball and fire home in the 52nd minute.

Mahious almost doubled his tally in the 67th minute after connecting with a brilliant cross from Zineddine Belaid, but saw his effort go agonisingly wide off goal.

However, the solitary strike by Mahious was enough to see the hosts march on in the competition and effectively book a place in the knockout stages.

Algeria will wrap up their Group matches with a tie against a high in confidence Mozambique side who overcame Libya in the earlier fixture.

For Ethiopia, they will look to win in the final group match against a wounded Libya side who sit at the bottom of the group.

Mozambique 3-2 Libya

Algeria 1-0 Ethiopia.

Global unemployment set to rise by 5.8% in 2023 – ILO

The International Labour Organisation says Global unemployment is slated to rise slightly in 2023, by around 3 million, to 208 million (corresponding to a global unemployment rate of 5.8 percent).

The moderate size of this projected increase is largely due to tight labour supply in high-income countries, a report published by the ILO stated.

“This would mark a reversal of the decline in global unemployment seen between 2020-2022. It means that global unemployment will remain 16 million above the pre-crisis benchmark (set in 2019).”

The report, titled, World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends 2023  (WESO Trends), also projects that global employment growth will be only 1.0 percent in 2023, less than half the level in 2022.

According to a statement published on the ILO website, current global economic slowdown is likely to force more workers to accept lower quality, poorly paid jobs which lack job security and social protection.

“The situation would also accentuate inequalities exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis.”

ILO unemployment
In addition to unemployment, “job quality remains a key concern”, the report said, adding that “Decent Work is fundamental to social justice”. A decade of progress in poverty reduction faltered during the COVID-19 crisis . Despite a nascent recovery during 2021, the continuing shortage of better job opportunities is likely to worsen, the study showed.

The current slowdown means that many workers will have to accept lower quality jobs, often at very low pay, sometimes with insufficient hours.

Furthermore, as prices rise faster than nominal labour incomes, the cost-of-living crisis risks pushing more people into poverty. This trend comes on top of significant declines in income seen during the COVID-19 crisis, which in many countries affected low-income groups worst.

The report also identifies a new, comprehensive measure of unmet need for employment – the global jobs gap.

As well as those who are unemployed, this measure includes people who want employment but are not actively searching for a job, either because they are discouraged or because they have other obligations such as care responsibilities. The global jobs gap stood at 473 million in 2022, around 33 million above the level of 2019.

Oyo Governor Promises To Bequeath Legacy Of Good Education

0

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said one of the objectives of his administration is to leave behind good education, which is the real and best legacy to bequeath to the oncoming generation.

Makinde made the disclosure, on Tuesday, while inaugurating the Implementation Committee for the Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, tasking the team to make the university the number one education degree awarding institution in Nigeria.

At the event, which held at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, , Ibadan, the governor disclosed that his administration decided to upgrade the institution to a university in other to create a platform for training the best manpower to run the education sector in the country.

He further allayed the fears of those he described as critics on the capability of the state government to fund the new university, saying the same method adopted to secure the sole ownership of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, would be put to use.

Makinde said: “We have demonstrated that capacity and my answer is that those critics, who are not even our regular supporters, should vote for Omituntun 2.0, and then, we will show how we can repeat the same feat.”

While charging members of the committee to work out the policy and process by which the institution would be run, the governor said the goal of his government is that the new university of education would become the topmost institution for the acquisition of degrees in the field of education in Nigeria.

Makinde expressed confidence that the members of the committee were up to the task and would bring their experience to bear in the discharge of the duty given to them, considering the calibre of people in the committee and the decades of experience they have working in the area of education.

New grounds

He noted that the committee was breaking new ground by being the first to chart the course for the institution and showing the best way things should be done so as to surpass expectations, urging the members to leave a good legacy as what is more important than the aesthetics of the building is what the students would take with them when they leave the school

“The thought you should have in mind is that we are looking to create a shop for human resources to come and find the best talents that will run our schools, bearing in mind that teachers know the thoughts of their students. It means that what we are inaugurating here today has the potential to shape the thoughts of many generations to come,” the governor added.

Pop

Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Ayodeji Omole, on behalf of the committee, appreciated Governor Makinde for giving them the opportunity to serve the people of Oyo State and promised that the committee members would put in their best and deliver in good time.

Omole further pledged that although the assignment before it is not new but a big task, the committee would discharge its duty with courage and integrity and be fair to everybody but shall not compromise.
