Paediatricians Enlighten Mothers On Tips To Save Preterm Babies

0

The Paediatric Association of Nigeria, PAN, has staged an awareness walk on how to save premature and under weight babies.

The walk, tagged; “PAN Walk for IKMC” (Immediate Kangaroo Mother Care), was held on Tuesday in Akure, Ondo State Southwest Nigeria.

The President of PAN, Dr Olufemi Ogunrinde, said the walk was to raise awareness on what could be done to save premature babies from 2.5 kg downwards.

Dr Ogunrinde explained that a baby that was born prematurely would need heat, and that could be provided by placing the infant on a mother or caregivers chest.

He said “It is a walk to create awareness on Immediate Kangaroo Mother Care.

“That is what kangaroos do when they have babies, and it has been shown to work, that is what they do in many teaching hospitals, and we want people to know that anybody can do it.”

The PAN President stated that the walk was a prelude to the organisation’s annual conference, which would hold on Wednesday in Akure.

He said that the conference would also deliberate on improved children’s health in Nigeria.

Also speaking, Dr Muyiwa Alonge, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of PAN Conference 2023, said that apart from ensuring body fitness, the walk was to sensitise stakeholders on vulnerable babies, especially the ones with 2.5 Kg weight and below.

Alonge stated that babies within such weight were at the risk of early mortality.

He said that IKMC encouraged keeping such babies glued to the mother’s chest.I

It is a skin to skin contact. In that contact, there will be transfer of heat from mother to the baby, and it will keep the baby warm, the baby can be there for hours.

“This is found to be more effective than regular incubators that we use in the hospital.

“This mostly affects babies that weigh 2.5 kg or less. They tend to catch cold more easily, and that could be fatal, because the average weight should be 3 kg and above,”DrAlonge explained.

According to him, the 2023 conference of the organisation will look at optimising child health, in spite of the socio-economic challenges in the health sector, and the country at large.

Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, a consultant at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, said that mothers practicing the IKMC method must ensure that the babies were placed in the position they would breathe properly.

According to Adejuyigbe, the initiative reduces cost and infection transmission.

“It also reduces cold, which is one of the conditions that cause infant mortality, particularly for the underweight babies.

“And it is not only the mothers that can do this, the fathers can also do it, even the grandmothers, as well as the older siblings.

“This also creates a greater bond because one cannot place a baby on the chest for such a long period and not love the child. That kind of child cannot be abandoned,” She said.

The Consultant maintained that such babies also had higher chances of survival than those placed in incubators.

According to her, the World Health Organisation has carried out a study on the initiative in many countries of the world, and found it functional.

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has urged the media to be more professional in discharging their duties, especially on matters concerning national security.

General Tukur Gusau also appreciated the media for their continuous support to the Armed forces in National development.

General Gusau also said that “as general election is coming, media should not report anything that will affect the morale of the troops and the credibility of the Armed Forces as they work towards supporting other government agencies to achieve peaceful and credible operations across the country”.

Alexei Navalny Vows to Keep Up Opposition

0

Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has used the second anniversary of his incarceration to reinforce his promise to keep up his opposition, as his family and allies started a campaign to free him.

Navalny, 46, was arrested exactly two years ago as he returned to Russia from Germany, where he had been treated for poisoning with a deadly Soviet-era nerve agent in what he and some Western nations said was
“a Russian state assassination attempt.” The Kremlin denied involvement.

I’m not going to surrender my country to them, and I believe that the darkness will eventually fade away,” Navalny wrote on Twitter via his lawyers.

Navalny is the highest-profile of the few remaining opposition voices in Russia.

The lawyer-turned-activist has been sentenced to a combined 11-1/2 years in jail in two separate fraud cases, which he said had been trumped up to silence him, and his anti-corruption organisation has been banned as extremist.

Dasha Navalnaya, his daughter, appeared in a video clip on Tuesday to launch a campaign to free her father, who she said was being repeatedly and “unjustly put in solitary confinement” in prison for his fierce opposition to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Guild Seeks Improved Incentives for Nigerian Doctors

0

The National Guild of Medical Directors ,GMD, has appealed to government at all levels to create an enabling environment and provide attractive incentives for doctors and other health workers.

The President of GMD, Dr Raymond Kuti said this in a communique issued at the end of the guild’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The theme of the AGM was ‘ Human Resource Management for Healthcare:Challenges, Strategies and Opportunities.’

Incentives

He said attractive incentives could make doctors and health workers who had left the country come back home.

Dr Kuti said; “Poor working conditions and weak infrastructure with chronic underfunding are compounding the issue with increased workload and overwork for those who remain in service.

“Limited career opportunities for advancement compounded by political interference and the lack of performance-based promotion.”

” This leads to low morale and poor attitude amongst the health workforce and the pervasive challenging political climate and insecurity is an important reason for uninhibited brain drain,” he said.

Dr Kuti said the lack of adherence to the Commonwealth Code of Practice for International Recruitment of Health Workers made it easy for other countries to recruit medical professionals with impunity.

He explained the guild had however identified strategies that can be adopted by government and private sector organisations to retain doctors in Nigeria and curb brain drain.

Kuti said’: ”One of such strategies is for the organisations to provide career advancement programmes and opportunities by investing in training, learning and development programs to keep abreast of new innovations.

“Develop and implement enhanced health sector salary and incentives schemes especially in deprived areas to improve quality of life…Skills such as effective communications, resilience, leadership, emotional intelligence, empathy, and quality assurance management must be actively taught to health professionals-starting early in schools. This will also help to improve communication channels and provide effective, ethical leadership and governance in healthcare institutions.”

Human resource

Dr Kuti also said the Human Resources (HR) management was imperative to ease burnout and minimise dissatisfaction while improving work-life balance for healthcare professionals.

He said “solutions to mitigate or reverse brain drain among healthcare workers in Nigeria must be practical and adopt a systemic approach, adding, ”there are short and long-term strategies.”

Dr Kuti said the large contingent of health workers in the diaspora was a pool of great resources that the nation can still benefit from through skills transfer, mentorship and the use of technology.

He urged that innovative approaches to increasing the pool of health workers available should be explored.

This includes elimination of roodblocks such as licensing of doctors that discourage middle-level doctors from coming back to Nigeria.

“Rehiring of retired physicians on retainership or contract hosis to fill in the gaps created by doctors who have left the country and to also use their wealth of experience to mentor younger doctors,” Dr Kuti further stated.

He said the guild would engage with the government and all stakeholders in the implementation of the WHO policy on towns in advanced countries poaching healthcare workers from developing nations.

Dr Kuti also said: ”The guild would promote multilateral negotiations between Nigeria and the key countries doctors and other health workers emigrate to so as to secure controlled emigration on more profitable terms for the country.

Resuscitation of an abandoned exchange programme that allowed residents and other cadres of health workers to go overseas for a specified period for specialised training and then come back to give back.

“Likewise, Nigerian resident doctors in training in the diaspora should be able to come home for short, specialised training periods that will be counted as part of their training,” he said.

Cameroon Boss Saidou Happy With Derby Win

0

Cameroon tactician Alioum Saidou is happy with his side’s 1-0 win over Congo in their first Group E match at the TotalEnergies CHAN 2022 in Oran, Algeria.

The former international player now turned coach is in cloud nine with his first victory at a major competition – one that he will remember for a long time considering that it was in a Central African Derby that carries a lot of weight back home for the fans who detest losing to their neighbours.

I am very happy because it was very complicated game especially in this competition. I had to motivate the players to win the game. We did it and we are very happy to win this game,” Saidou said in the post-match press conference.

We knew that this game was not going to be easy because it is a derby, but we are satisfied with the players who did an incredible job today. We were able to implement our strategy and apply what we have been working on for many months now and that is what is important to us as a team.”

The last time the two sides met at the CHAN was in 2018 in Morocco with the Red Devils edging Cameroon 1-0 thanks to a goal by Junior Makiesse so tonight’s victory was in more ways than one revenge for the defeat four years back.

Cameroon made 10 shots at goal but just three were on target – something that worried Saidou afterwards despite him insisting that at the end of the day, all that matters is the win.

His front lineup could have contributed up to four goals thanks to the continuous attacking efforts of eventual man-of-the-match Jerome Ngom but they were wasteful.

Saidou said, “We always have something that we work with at training. The most important thing is to create these chances. We are happy that Ngom is helping us to win. We know our strategy.

We try to have a good attitude which is very important here in Algeria. We shall stay focused on our target. We know that the Algerian people are supporting us. We shall deal with the tournament step by step,” Saidou added.

Cameroon’s next and last Group E fixture is against Niger on January 24 at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran.

He noted that Nigerians must change their view that corruption is only synonymous with the nation alone, saying no modern society is free of corruption.

“…one where we establish a national work ethic of honesty, of hard work. It is what is taught and learned that shape the character of individuals and nations. But it is not just teachings, government must also lead this ethical revolution by rewarding ethical behaviours and ensuring speedy punishment for misconduct”, Osinbajo said.

He called on educational institutions to inculcate the value of honesty, diligence, hard work, respect, trustworthiness discipline and integrity in their students to raise youths with the right thinking.

Every modern society has had to deal with corruption. Corruption is not a Nigerian thing, sometimes we deceive ourselves it is Nigerian, no, many countries, in fact, most countries of the world had been more corrupt than us, but their elites sat down and decided they have to deal with it because if they do not deal with it, it will deal with them.

There is no modern society today that has not had to deal with corruption and they deal with it by their elites sitting down and saying we have to agree this is the way forward, we cannot continue to repeat the same thing, we must enthrone minimum ethical standard to succeed”, Osinbajo affirmed.

Osinbajo listed, the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, MKO Abiola, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Bola Ajibola – who are all old students of the school as exceptional Nigerians who recorded great achievements in public service as a result of the training and values they got from the school.

Improving the educational sector

Ogun state Governor, Dapo Abiodun appealed to other alumni associations in various schools in the state to emulate the good gestures of BBHS Old Boys’ Association in advancing the educational development of the state.

Abiodun commended the Old Boys for a job well done and reassured the people that his government will continue to work on the educational sector to improve the students’ standard of learning.

Attendees at the event

The Global President of BBHS Old Boys Association, Professor Kayode Oyesiku said that the Association remains steadfast in the advancement of knowledge by contributing their quota to the development of the school and society.

Prof Oyesiku listed some of the projects executed by the association in the school to include: the construction of a mini-built stadium, an ultra-modern and well-equipped library, an alumni hall, an art studio and a car park.

He stated that the centennial celebration was packaged to educate all about Nigeria’s national development.

Israel To Support Africa Improve Health Sector

0

Israel’s Hadassah Hospital has expressed willingness to support African countries to improve their health sectors by sharing best practices, developing research as Hadassah Hospitals is already at the forefront of global innovations.

Ms Barbara Sofer, the Director of Public Relations and Communications, Hadassah Office in Israel made this known on Tuesday in Jerusalem, while briefing some Nigerian Journalists on a tour to the hospital in Israel.

This is also as Sofer disclosed the several breakthroughs in research and procedures that Hadassah Hospital have recorded making it the solution center for terrible conditions.

One of such breakthroughs Sofer disclosed is a treatment for bone marrow cancer, Myeloma which is less expensive in Hadassah Hospitals and affordable for patients from across the world.

She said; “One of the latest things we are very proud of, is this new treatment for multiple Maloma.

“Getting it in the U.S cost money, but here our doctor has managed to legally create a less expensive version of this.

“And something that will be possible for not only our country but throughout the world and in affordable places that do not have the budget…So it is a very innovative treatment with a very high success rate. Israel’s Hadassah hospital develops breakthrough affordable treatment for cancer.

We have a pro promising treatment for macro-degeneration and also is based on stem cells, Israel has an advantage that we are of as one of the counties that have stem cells available as opposed to the United States when they were banned to use this embryo stem cells.

“We now have treatment for macular degeneration using stem cells, a breakthrough treatment is back surgery where many people can have broken backs and they cannot undergo surgery because they are frail, we also have the wake surgery.

“That is the direction we are working in high tech innovations,” Sofer said

Open-door policy

The Executive Director, Hadassah Office in Israel, Ms Suzzie Benvenziti said that the hospital operates an open-door policy which makes it open to everyone irrespective of religion, and race.

Benvenziti said that “the hospital which is innovative and reassert hub has been able to thrive in Israel amidst several challenges.”

The hospital has an open-door policy treating everybody without regards to religion, race and nationality and same is with the staff working here coming from every background.

“For this reason, in 2005, Hadassah hospitals were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and this is really one of the core elements of our values of the hospital
“The Hospital is a Center of excellence with over 200 research projects happening here at every time, we swerve more than 1 million people annually and we are at the fore front of innovation worldwide.

“Various departments have been named on top of their field, various projects have been recognized, acquired by companies from across the world,” Benvenziti said.

Anaesthesia Specialist in the hospital Holgar Fung said that there is a lot that African countries can learn from Hadassah hospital to improve medi-care in the continent.

Infrastructure

Fung, a Cameroonian Doctor in the center urged African governments to build health infrastructure, equip them, regular trainings of medical personnel, improve and carryout more procedures and treatments, conduct researches to meet global standards.

He said; “I am very hopeful about the African continent because there are more and more awareness because of the internet and the younger generation is becoming more and aware.

“On infrastructure, we need to have structures, not only build but equip. We need to train people, and also we need to create linkages.

“When it comes to training, we have a lot of medical schools on the continent but the problem is we do not encourage the culture of research which is really key and the center piece at Hadassah because the more you research the more you innovate, the more possibility you have to help people.”

He said; “Another thing on the structure is procurement of logistics, open market and non-monopolisation. Because of greed, only one person wants to control the whole chain for personal gains. We should work on ourselves for collective benefits.”

“We need to improve our offers of health care, because most of our people go to India and the truth is, Indi is not better than ours.

“Increase the numbers of procedure we do and this can only be possible if we train more people, we need to buy equipment improve in supply chain management,” Fung explained.

VP Osinbajo Urges African Youths To Learn From History

Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has urged young people to learn from history rather than repeat it or allow it to jeopardise a better future.

The Nigerian Vice President spoke on Monday when he was the Special Guest of Honour at a youth forum to mark the 60th birthday of the Liberian Vice President, Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor.

But he was first received in Monrovia by President George Weah who held talks with him and welcomed him to the West African nation, expressing appreciation for the VP’s one-day visit.

The Liberian President, his Deputy and different Liberian groups welcomed and  decorated him with traditional recognitions and awards at a youth forum in Monrovia.

Later at the forum themed “Conversation with the Vice President and Young People,” Dr. Howard-Taylor, described the Nigerian counterpart as a humble and selfless leader who inspires hope for a better Africa.

Commending Professor Osinbajo, Dr. Howard-Taylor said, “he is the most humble politician in Africa” and noted that emerging leaders across the continent have so much to learn from his humility and commitment to service.”

The Vice President also was honoured by the Liberian youths with an award of Distinguished Service to Humanity – for his exemplary service to the development of Nigeria, Liberia, West Africa, and the rest of the continent.

Presenting the award plaque to the VP, the co-host of the event and youth activist, Mr. Benjamin Sanvee, said the award was in appreciation of “all your service, everything that you have done and will continue to do.”

According to him, “this is in deep appreciation for years of stellar service to Nigeria, Liberia, to the ECOWAS region, the continent of Africa and the world at large. We, the youth of Liberia, and by extension, the youth of Africa, are proud to present to you this symbol of appreciation.”

You are a shining example of an exceptional, selfless and exemplary leader, who is quietly and steadily, not just a source of inspiration for Africa’s youths, but you have impacted the lives of millions around the continent in so many ways.

“You are a rare and outstanding leader and we thank you for all that you do and will still continue to do. I present this plaque to you, on behalf of young Africans, as one of Africa’s most outstanding leaders,” the Youth leader added.

Furthermore, Professor Osinbajo was decorated at the event with the traditional title of “Chief Flomo Barwolor” meaning “the light to the people.” This traditional title was presented by a Liberian Cultural group led by Ambassador Madam Julee Endee.

Fielding questions earlier during the conversation with Liberian youths, Vice President Osinbajo spoke on learning from past experiences.

According to him “every sensible person learns from history rather than from experience, because if you wait to learn from experience, you will suffer. What you are supposed to do with history and your past, is to learn from it and never let it repeat itself.”

He said: “One of the most important things for young people is that you must bear in mind all the time that your history is not your destiny, it is just part of your story. Your destiny is what you have decided, where you are going and you will get there as long as you don’t allow the tyrant and oppressor of history to hold you back.”

Encouraging the young people, the VP urged them to leverage opportunities offered by emerging technologies to improve educationally and economically, stressing that the benefits of technological innovations are numerous.

Asked about the impact and prevalence of Social Media, Professor Osinbajo said; “I think that social media is a blessing for everyone, not just for politicians but the electorate and others. The platforms are so crucial in being able to communicate and it is also important to recognise that every generation has its own technology.

“It has its abuses and downsides, but you must make sure you maximise its real advantages. One of the main advantages is that for people like us born decades ago, to do simple research, you’d have to actually go to a library. Today, I can do all my research with just my iPad, while I am sitting down practically anywhere, as long as I have Internet connectivity.”

Professor Osinbajo said that “young people are at the most advanced moment in human history. One of the interesting things is that your smartphones have more computing power than all the computing power that took the Apollo 11 spacecraft to the moon.

“In terms of advancement, this generation doesn’t compare to any before it. We, who are older than you, are enjoying your generation’s technology, and I hope and pray that you would take full advantage of it to expand your knowledge, and scope of activities, and for broadening enterprise and your communication with other people.”

The forum was also attended by the First Lady of Sierra Leone, Madame Fatima Maada Bio.

She commended Professor Osinbajo for his exemplary leadership, especially in promoting the cause of a better Africa for all.

She also took questions and interacted with the young people at the forum, sharing the platform with the Nigerian and Liberian VPs.

Also, while in Monrovia, Professor Osinbajo made a brief stop at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center For Women Development, to participate in the programme for the ECOWAS Human Rights Day, which also coincided with the 5th anniversary of Ms Sirleaf’s post- presidency.

In his remarks there, he applauded the contributions of the former Liberian President to the development of the country both in and outside office.

The VP said; “One of the things you have been able to show is not just that it is possible to serve well, but also to serve out of office and to do perhaps more.

“What you have done since you left office, has had perhaps more impact, especially around Africa, and we are really proud of the work you have done and your achievements. We pray that there will even be greater achievements in the future.”

Former President Sirleaf welcomed the Vice President to Liberia and urged him to ensure there is more female participation in governance and politics in Africa.

Prof. Osinbajo was accompanied to the meeting with former President Sirleaf by his host and Liberian counterpart.

Council Supports Katsina State Farmers To Boost Moringa Production

The Nigerian Exports Promotion Council, NEPC has expressed readiness to support moringa farmers in Katsina State, to boost production and export of the produce.

NEPC’s Controller in the state, Mr Kabir Yusuf stated this when members of the National Moringa Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria, NAMFAPMAN paid him a visit, on Tuesday in Katsina.

He said parts of the mandate of the council was to promote non-oil export in the country.

He stressed the need for the farmers to add value to moringa by enhancing its packaging, with a view to attract customers at the international markets.

The Controller also advised them to liase with the Katsina State Agricultural Development Authority, KTARDA towards enhancing training of their members on Good Agricultural Practices, GAP.

He said this would enable farmers to identify varieties which provide maltitude of leaves with high oil content, and could be easily process into powder.

“Moringa is a wonderful or miracle plant, there is no limitation to the importance of the leaves, we all know that,” he said.

Comprehensive Data

He therefore, urged farmers to register with the council and provide comprehensive data to boost export of moringa products.

Earlier, the National Vice President of the association in charge of the North-West, Mr Rabe Hashimu said the state is blessed with abundance moringa species.

He noted that effective harnessing of the trees would boost income for the farmers and the government.

“Engaging more farmers into moringa farming will create job opportunities to people. It contents essential nutrients in food.

“Nigeria has one of the best quality moringa in the world.

“Studies show that its powder and oil have high medicinal contents for curing ailments like ulcer, hepatitis, High Blood Pressure, diabetes, skin diseases, among others.

“It is also being used in some countries in treatment of malnutrition in children,” he said.

According to him, the association is educating its members on preservation and processing techniques to reduce losses.

He reitrated readiness to partner with the council and other relevant bodies to boost production and provide market for moringa products.
