The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has alerted members of the public to the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications falsely claiming to originate from the Bank.
In a statement signed by Hakama Sidi-Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications at the Bank, the apex bank said the messages are designed to mislead the public and, in some cases, trick individuals into compromising their personal and financial information.
According to the CBN, the fraudulent communications often contain links that prompt recipients to click, while spreading false information about the Bank’s leadership, licensing processes, and policy matters, with the aim of gaining unauthorised access to users’ accounts.
The Bank advised Nigerians to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with suspicious messages or websites.
It urged the public to always verify the authenticity of any communication attributed to the CBN through its official website and recognised media platforms.
The apex bank also warned against sharing sensitive personal or financial information on unverified platforms, stressing that such actions could expose individuals to cyber fraud.
Members of the public were further encouraged to report any suspicious emails, links, or websites to relevant law enforcement authorities for prompt investigation.
The CBN reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s financial system, noting that it continues to strengthen its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to protect Nigerians from digital threats.
