Authorities in Bangkok have set up over 300 free cooling centres to help residents cope with an intense heatwave sweeping across Thailand.

The initiative follows three weeks of extreme temperatures, with heat index levels combining heat and humidity exceeding 50°C in some areas.

Since April 1, officials say “the index has consistently stayed within a dangerous range of 42°C to nearly 52°C.”

While April is usually the hottest month, rising temperatures in recent years have raised serious health concerns. Authorities warn that prolonged exposure can lead to conditions such as dizziness, exhaustion, and heat cramps.

They urged the people to limit time outdoors, especially in the afternoons.

The cooling centres, located in air-conditioned public spaces like libraries, schools, and government buildings, as well as shaded outdoor areas, are providing temporary relief.

Reports, including those from Bangkok Post, indicate that tens of thousands of residents have already used the facilities to rest, work, and study, while tourists and wealthier individuals often turn to malls and restaurants for comfort.
