The Action Democratic Party, ADP, held its National Executive Committee, NEC’s, meeting, commending the Independent Electoral Commission for its constitutional role in the verification exercise held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The ADP National Chairman Mr. Yabagi Sani, made the statement at the commencement of the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting, and INEC verification exercise held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja Nigeria’s capital.

The ADP chairman said that the NEC meeting was in line with the political party’s activities, which strengthened the internal democracy of the party ahead of the ADP’s 2026 National Convention.

Mr. Sani said that the members of the NEC comprise members of the National Working Committee, NWC, State Chairmen, Zonal leaders, and other members of the ADP.

He also said the ADP will adopt a consensus candidate during their primary elections and National Convention.

The ADP National Chairman called for constitutional reforms to ensure greater independence of electoral institutions, particularly in the appointment of INEC leadership.

“The Constitution needs to be amended so that no single individual has the power to appoint the person who chairs INEC. Not just Bola Ahmed Tinubu—any leader in that position could abuse such powers,” he added.

Under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, the Chairman of INEC is appointed by the President, subject to confirmation by the Senate. This provision is contained in Section 154(1) of the Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint the INEC chairman and national commissioners.

In addition, Paragraph 14 of the Third Schedule outlines the composition of INEC and affirms that such appointments must follow due process. The involvement of the Senate is intended as a check on executive powers.
