The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and National Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, Nyesom Wike, has emphasised that opposition status must be earned through electoral victories, not mere declarations.
Wike made this known on Friday during a courtesy visit to the party’s national headquarters, Wadata House in Abuja, where he charged the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC) to remain united and committed to repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reaffirming his loyalty, Wike pledged unwavering support to the new leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, both in the lead-up to 2027 and beyond.
“You cannot become an opposition party without winning elections. Those who claim to lead the opposition have not secured electoral victories,” he stated.

The minister explained that his visit was a deliberate move to demonstrate solidarity with the NWC and reassure them of his continued backing.
“My coming here is to reassure you of my support. I have come to pledge my loyalty to all of you,” he said.
Acknowledging the internal challenges that have plagued the party, Wike noted that the PDP is gradually emerging stronger from its crises, stressing that rebuilding efforts would require dedication and sacrifice.
“Yes, we have had our challenges, but we are gradually overcoming them. It takes hard work and sacrifice to move the party forward,” he added.
He urged the party leadership to actively engage aggrieved members and those who had defected, noting that many still maintain an interest in returning.
“Reach out to them and bring them back. Many are concerned about opportunities, including party tickets. You know what to do,” Wike advised.
He further called on the NWC to remain focused despite ongoing legal disputes, expressing confidence in the party’s legal successes.
“We have recorded victories at both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. Stay focused and work as a team,” he said.
Repositioning the party as an Opposition Force
In his response, the PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, expressed appreciation for Wike’s support and assured that the new leadership would work diligently to reposition the party.
Also speaking, the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, commended Wike’s continued contributions, describing his visit as a strong demonstration of commitment to the party’s progress.
The visit comes as the PDP intensifies efforts to rebuild and strengthen its standing as a formidable opposition force ahead of the 2027 elections.
