0

A remodelled administrative block and standard utility building has been unveiled at the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Victory Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, south-south Nigeria as part of effort to boost personnel welfare.

The Flag Officer Commanding, FOC, Eastern Naval Command, ENC, Rear Admiral  Ibrahim Dewu  who commissioned the facilities said that the buildings would significantly add value to the navy.

Rear Admiral Dewu remarked, “the newly constructed  utility block and remodeled administrative block  at NNS Victory Calabar, is both auspicious and significant considering the value these projects will add to the Nigerian Navy.

“The availability of quality health care facility, worship centre as well as a good working environment for personnel is no doubt a necessity for maximum performance. The command will continuously support its bases in achieving success in terms of operations and in any other way that will better the Nigerian Navy,” Dewu assured.

Remaining focused

The Commander, NNS Victory, Commodore Ifeanyi Okpala noted that despite some challenges encountered in the line of duty, the base was resolute on its mandate and assigned goals.

Okpala stated, “we have always placed a high premium on the welfare of our personnel as enshrined in my operational goals, especially training and welfare as it is a cardinal feature amongst military bases world wide and a driving force behind professionalism. These in essence will boost the moral of personnel.

“Although the base encountered some challenges, which is usual on our focus on operations, infrastructure development, human resource management and administration were aptly pursued  with vigour.

Today is another mile stone in the history of the Nigerian Navy Ship Victory, as we witness the fulfilment of one of the strategic visions of mine, which aligns with the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, whose cardinal objective is to meet the welfare and social needs of personnel.

“By establishing infrastructures, within the social development of the personnel in general, NNS Victory set out to accomplish targets for the realization of the Chief of the Naval Staff’s vision,” he explained.

RIFAN call on traditional rulers to allocate unoccupied land for cultivation

0

Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Lagos State Chapter, has called on traditional rulers to allocate unoccupied, land for rice cultivation in their communities.

RIFAN Chairman, Mr Raphael Hunsa, stated in an interview on Tuesday, in Lagos, that many land were un-utilised and abandoned in farming communities such as Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry.

He noted that lack of access to farmlands was affecting food production in the state, “There was the need for farmers to upgrade their current paddy production capacity wiith the inauguration of Lagos Rice Mill in Imota.”

He said that traditional rulers are the custodian of land within their communities and can interface with land owners on behalf of the farmers.

The newly inaugurated Lagos Rice mill require constant and regular supply of rice paddy to meet its optimal production level.

According to him, to meet the 240,000 metric tonnes of paddy demand of the mill yearly, there is a need for farmers to double or triple their present production capacity.

“If we are able to increase capacity on rice farming, that way we will provide more paddy and the project will not be redundant.

“We need to be feeding this project regularly and the only way we can achieve that is through continuous production but we do not have adequate land to farm.

“In fact, Lagos State Government is trying in the area of agriculture as they are doing their best to see that there is sufficient food for residents.

“My appeal goes to all the traditional rulers and ‘Baales’ in Lagos to release all un-utilised land to farmers for massive cultivation of rice.

“Lack of land is a major barrier affecting rice farmers in Lagos and we have many lands lying fallow in various communities without being utilised,” he said.

He urged the state Ministry of Agriculture to interface with the traditional rulers on allocation of land for agriculture purposes.

“We want government to approach the traditional rulers to release more lands, so that we can cultivate more and encourage more people to come into rice production.”

U.S, Germany set to supply tanks to Ukraine

0

U.S and Germany will provide Ukrainian crews with more protection, speed and accuracy. But if half a dozen Western nations each provide 14 tanks, then that would bring the total to nearly 100 which could make a difference.

This was confirmed by Ukrainian officials who added that Western tanks – including the UK’s Challenger 2, Germany’s Leopard 2 and the US-made Abrams – are all seen as superior to their Soviet-era counterparts, like the ubiquitous T-72.

But Western modern main battle tanks are not a wonder weapon or game-changer on their own. It’s also what’s being supplied alongside them. In recent weeks, there’s been a step change in heavy weapons being supplied by the West – including hundreds more armoured vehicles, artillery systems and ammunition.

Combined together, they are the kind of military hardware needed to punch through Russian lines and to retake territory. If Ukrainian troops can be trained and the weapons delivered in time, they could form key elements of any spring offensive. A missing element for offensive operations is still air power.

Ukraine has been asking for the West to provide modern fighter jets since the war began. So far, none has been delivered. While there has been no official statement from the German government, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann of the liberal FDP party, who chairs the defence committee of the German parliament, welcomed the reports.

The decision was tough, it took far too long, but in the end it was unavoidable,” she said, adding that it would come as a relief to “the battered and brave Ukrainian people”.

Allied nations had become frustrated at what they perceived as German reluctance to send the armoured vehicles in recent days. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius earlier said that Berlin had given other nations the green light to train Ukrainians to use Leopard 2 tanks, but did not commit to sending their own.

The Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, on Tuesday called on Western countries to give Kyiv hundreds of tanks to form a “crushing fist” against Russia.

Tanks are one of the components for Ukraine to return to its 1991 borders,” he wrote on Telegram. Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to Washington, wrote on Telegram: “If the United States decides to supply tanks, then justifying such a step with arguments about ‘defensive weapons’ will definitely not work.

“This would be another blatant provocation against the Russian Federation.”

Mr Hipkins built a reputation as the minister who led New Zealand’s Covid-19 strategy. At the ruling Labour Party’s caucus over the weekend, Mr Hipkins received unanimous support to be promoted to lead the country, and now faces the uphill task of retaining power in the upcoming general elections in October.

Opinion polls have suggested that his party is trailing its conservative opposition, the National Party, in popularity. The country of five million was among the first to close borders. This move won plaudits for keeping New Zealand virus-free early in the pandemic, but frustration set in later among the Kiwis tired of the zero-tolerance strategy, which saw nationwide lockdowns over a single infection.

Mr Hipkins previously conceded that strict lockdowns should have been scaled back earlier.

Most recently, Mr Hipkins also held the weighty ministerial portfolios of education, police, and public service.

Nicknamed “Chippy”, the father-of-two had said his commitment and politics is to “make sure that we provide opportunities for all Kiwis who want to work hard, to be able to work hard and get ahead and provide a better life for themselves and for their families.”

He will hold his first cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Ms Ardern ended her last day in office with a visit to Ratana, a small town north of Wellington, with politicians and Maori elders. She said she was ready to be a backbench MP, a sister and a mother.
