Russian Flags Banned At Australian Open After Ukraine Complaint

0

Russian and Belarusian flags have been banned from the Melbourne Park precinct during the Australian Open after a complaint from the Ukraine ambassador to the country.

Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia and New Zealand, posted a picture showing a Russian flag hanging from a bush beside the court where his compatriot Kateryna Baindl was playing her first-round match on Monday.

I strongly condemn the public display of the Russian flag during the game of the Ukrainian tennis player Kateryna Baindl at the Australian Open today,” he wrote on Twitter.

I call on Tennis Australia to immediately enforce its ‘neutral flag’ policy.”

Tennis Australia responded on Tuesday by banning the flags of the two countries.

Flags from Russia and Belarus are banned onsite at the Australian Open,” Tennis Australia said in a statement.

Our initial policy was that fans could bring them in but could not use them to cause disruption. Yesterday we had an incident where a flag was placed courtside.

“The ban is effective immediately. We will continue to work with the players and our fans to ensure the best possible environment to enjoy the tennis.”

Belarus is being used as a key staging ground for Russia’s war in Ukraine, which Moscow terms a “special operation”.

Russian and Belarusian players were banned from Wimbledon last year but are able to compete as individual athletes without national affiliation at the Australian Open.

Their flags are not displayed beside their names in TV broadcasts, as is the case for other players, and their nation is not indicated on draw sheets.

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka said she understood how the display of the flags of the two countries might upset Ukrainian players.

“I really thought that sport is nothing to do with politics but if everyone feels better this way, then it’s okay,” the fifth seed told reporters after her first-round win on Tuesday.

“If Tennis Australia made this decision to make them feel better, okay. They did it, what can I do? I can do nothing.”

Ukraine’s number two Marta Kostyuk told reporters on Monday that she would not shake hands with tour rivals from Russia and Belarus who she feels have not done enough to speak out against the invasion.

SA Teams Host Champions Cup Semis In Europe

0

South African clubs will have to ‘host’ any potential Champions Cup semifinals in Europe and not in South Africa, competition organiser EPCR said.

In what was previously rugby union’s European continental club championship, three South African franchises – the Bulls of Pretoria, the Sharks of Durban and the Stormers of Cape Town – qualified this year for the first time.

The Champions Cup semifinals will take place “in Europe”, reports said.

“This is an agreement with the South African rugby federation (SARU)” a spokesperson said.

Bulls, Stormers and Sharks, however, will be able to stage games in South Africa in the last 16 and quarterfinals.

“If the South African teams qualify for the semifinals, the matches will take place in Europe,” said another source close to the matter

The only rider to that is if two of them qualify to meet in the same semi in which case the match can be played in South Africa.

Currently, ahead of the fourth and final day of the group stage, the Sharks have already qualified while the Bulls and the Stormers are also both on track to reach the knockout stages.

The semifinals are scheduled for the end of April before the final in Dublin on 20th May.

Lagos To Address Challenges Of Untreated Domestic Waste

0

The Lagos State government has posed a challenge to addressing sanitation management in the State, acknowledging that it generates about 2.20 million cubic meters of untreated domestic wastewater on a daily basis.

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu made the disclosure at a 3-day Workshop organised by the Lagos State Waste Water Regulatory Commission in collaboration with Faecal Sludge Management Alliance, the Netherlands.

Speaking on the theme of the event; “Regulating Urban Sanitation Services: Guidelines and Standards”, the Wife of the Governor emphasised the need for a properly structured and sustainable arrangement to regulate and manage the faecal Sludge value chain starting from collection, transportation, treatment and disposal which according to her would yield both economic and environmental benefit to the State.

She maintained that the negative impact of inadequate and improper regulation of faecal sludge management on the health of people in general and children, in particular, is enormous, as the workshop would help to stimulate discussions aimed at facilitating a better understanding of the policy, legal and institutional framework for sanitation and wastewater management in Lagos State.

“As a Medical Doctor, I am conscious of the fact that all waterborne diseases are deadly. Experts have also established that there is an unbreakable relationship between health and the environment. They are both intertwined!”

“Diarrhea, for instance, is the second largest killer of children below 5 years in Nigeria, only next to Pneumonia. According to the World Health Organization (W.H.0), 88% of diarrhea cases are attributable to factors essentially originating from poor management of excreta disposal.

“With a population of over 20 million and annual growth of 2.9%, sanitation management is currently a challenge in Lagos.
State where about 2.20 million cubic meters of untreated domestic wastewater is generated daily based on 120 litre of water used per person per day.

“The reality on the ground as to the dire situation calls for all hands to be on deck to ensure effective and efficient regulation of faecal sludge management, thereby safeguarding the environment and protecting water resources of the State, and mitigating events of waterborne diseases.” she said

She added that without effective regulation, the dreams of having a livable, healthy, safe, and secure environment will continue to be a mirage, stressing for concerted efforts by stakeholders to advance the realization of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6) of universal access to clean water and sanitation; and also Pillar 2 of the THEMES Agenda which focuses on health and environment.

Policy guidelines

The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission, Mrs Funke Adepoju emphasised the need for stakeholders to key into the policy guidelines that would galvanize and up-skill critical sector players in the State in sustainably managing faecal sludge.

Adepoju mentioned that the workshop is a necessary beginning needed for long term sanitation transition to improve effectiveness of sanitation transition and ensure a regulatory systems for public health.

She noted that the process of convening stakeholders to develop dialogue, enhance coordination and strengthen information flow is fundamental and international best practice suggest no-one is better positioned to perform this function than a regulator.

Sanitation Law

In improving Legal and regulatory performance through African Sanitation Policy, the Vice Chancellor River State University, Prof. Nlerum Okogbule mentioned the need for strong sanitation law in Nigeria and to ensure we integrate the culture diversity while doing a review of the law.

Okogbule said that Improving legal and regulatory performance means enacting and reviewing laws that are tailored to the exigencies of the particular jurisdiction and the law must also capture the sanitation service chains.

He also stressed for the creation and promotion of awareness of the law and the use of traditional and social media to spread the awareness of an existing law.

Other speakers talked extensively about providing access to information through constant stakeholders engagement, access to adequate sanitation services and adequate funding.

They also expressed the need for the authorities to pursue the achievement of SDG Goal 6, which has to do with Clean water and Sanitation which seeks to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and Sanitation for all as well as prevent open defecation.

Above all, they advocated for efforts towards addressing the situation in order to prevent the 2.8 billion people globally expected to be denied of safely-managed sanitation by 2030.

South Africa Faces Legal Action Over Power Crisis

0

South African opposition groups, a trade union, and business owners have threatened to sue the government over the crippling blackouts in the country.

Report says they have given the government up to Friday to stabilise electricity supply or face legal action for contravening its duty to provide electricity.

The group has written a demand letter to the Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan, and the chief executive of the state utility firm Eskom, Andre de Ruyter, saying the state was in breach of its obligation to provide electricity.

Meanwhile, blackouts have persisted for more than a decade, amid poor management and corruption at state firm Eskom.

Recently the country has been having up to 10 hours of power cuts daily.

The problem has prompted the president to cancel a trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, to hold meetings at home with business and labour leaders.

DR Congo Awards Gas Blocks To North American Producers

0

Democratic Republic of Congo has awarded licences to three natural gas blocks in Lake Kivu on its eastern border to North American producers.

Report says the Makelele block was awarded to RED, a local subsidiary of United States-based Symbion Power.

The Idjwi block went to another US company, Winds Exploration and Production LLC.

While the Lwandjofu block was won by Canada-based Alfajiri Energy.

The hydrocarbons ministry Didier Budimbu said the production sharing contracts will be signed within 15 days, and some production is expected to start as early as next year.

Mr. Budimbu said he hoped the Symbion Power block would begin producing in 2024.

Symbion Power’s chief executive officer, Paul Hinks told said that production next year could be possible “if everything goes well.”

He said the process required tapping gas that is saturated in lake water more than 400 metres below the surface.

The gas block auction was part of a licensing round that included 27 onshore oil blocks. Some of the oil blocks were in Congo’s rainforest and peatlands, raising environmental concerns.

Mr. Budimbu said the oil blocks tender was due to end on January 29 but he was considering postponing the deadline to allow the allocation of more blocks.

Congo is hoping to emulate neighbouring Rwanda and use vast amounts of methane underneath the lake to generate electricity that can be used to fire fertilizer and cement manufacturing.

The cholera outbreak began in March last year and has killed more than 750 people.

While infections are still high in Lilongwe and Blantyre.

Health Minister, Khumbize Chiponda who was optimistic said schools now have access to safe water and improved sanitation facilities, which will go a long way in reducing infections reported in schools.

Meanwhile, Malawi is among 31 countries globally hit by cholera.

Last week, the government asked for international assistance as it was running low on medical supplies.

The widespread cases of cholera in the country resulted from the aftermath of tropical storm Ana and cyclone Gombe which caused extensive flooding last year and destroyed the country’s water and sanitation systems.
