Edo Gov’t to Prioritise Agricultural Development in 2023

0

The Edo State Government has disclosed plans to make the agriculture, health services and technology sectors a priority in 2023. It will build the capacity of youths in the state to find quality jobs in these sectors.

The Governor of the state, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, noted that the state government’s job creation drive will be boosted with the state’s cassava-to-ethanol initiative, Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP) and other agricultural programmes.

“Quite a number of jobs are currently being created from several opportunities in the State’s agricultural sector, such as the Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP), our cassava to ethanol initiatives, forestry plantations and also in poultry production. These and many more areas will contribute significantly to our Gross Domestic Product.

“This year we will continue our emphasis in building the capacity of our young population to find quality jobs in areas like agriculture, health services and technology. Hence the Edo State College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi will take in its first set of students before September this year, while the Edo State School of Health Technology will be rebuilt to meet global standards just like we did with our school of Nursing Sciences,” he said.

0

Nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kogi East Senatorial District have thrown their weight behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Sen. Kashim Shettima.

The LGAs on Sunday organised a mega rally in support of the candidature of the duo and showed support to the APC.

The mega rally was organised by Mr Suleiman Isyaka, the National Coordinator of an umbrella APC support group, ‘Tinubu/Shettima Ordained Movement’.

A mammoth crowd of APC supporters attended the event and recommitted themselves to ensuring the victory of Tinubu and Shettima during the Feb. 25 presidential poll.

The event which held in Ejule in Ofu LGA also attracted APC supporters from Ankpa. Olamaboro,Idah, Ofu, Ibaji, Dekina, Omala, Bassa and Igalamela/Odolu LGAs.

Isyaka said that the event tallied with the APC’s foundation which involved the actualisation of the Tinubu/Shettima ambition to win the 2023 presidential election.

“The purpose of everyone being here today as part of the activities lined up to secure a landslide victory for Tinubu and Shettima in the presidential poll.

“As at Dec. 30, 2022 when I was confirmed as the chairman of one of the strong support groups of the Tinubu/Shettima presidential candidacy, i came to my village in Ejule-Alle ward and swung into action.

“On that day, we had a lot of people who came for the occasion and they were very ready to support the APC at all levels.

“That proved to me that when i am out with the APC existing structure in my locality, I can replicate it to the other LGAs in the Eastern Senatorial District of Kogi.

“Also, our mission is to sensitise and to generate votes for our presidential candidate come Feb. 25,” he said.

Isyaka also urged all the members and the people of the nine LGAs to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), so that they can exercise their rights at the polls for the presidential candidate of the APC.

Mr Yahaya Shagari, the APC Chairman in Ofu LGA commended Isyaka for organising the laudable event by uniting all the party loyalists in Kogi East Senatorial District.

He added that the act displayed by Isyaka showed that APC was in the right direction in bringing all the nine LGAs in Igala land together to support the Tinubu/Shettima Ordained Movement.

“What is on the ground shows that we are waiting eagerly for the general election to cast our votes for our presidential candidate and his running mate,” Shagari said.

Also speaking, the Director-General of the Amalgamated APC Support Group (AASG), Dr Nasiru Mohammed lauded the organiser of the event for putting together the laudable initiative.

Mohammed, who was represented by Mr Musa Otigba, the Director, Campaign and Mobilisation for AASG said: “A vote for Tinubu/Shettima is a vote for a renewed hope for you and future generation.

“It is remarkable to note that the Tinubu/Shettima Ordained Movement is already a registered member of the AASG and that is why we are here to give you moral support.

“We are also here to encourage you to continue to do more for the victory of our party at all levels come 2023 general elections,” he said.

Jibril, while wishing  Nigerians a prosperous 2023, said Sports Administrators at the elementary and high schools level,  corporate bodies as well as ex-international have the mandate to support  government policies fast track the development of sports at the grassroots level.

At a time when we have more youth emerging from our different institutions of learning and those who have diversified into artisanal ventures, handball can offer them veritable platforms to have profitable careers in sports “ Jibril said.

The CHA Scribe said the implementation of the handball development programmes at schools is key to achieving any meaningful results at various levels of competitions.

State directors of sports and handball association chairmen must wake up to the realities on ground. they must be ready to support schools with genuine plans of handball development at age-grade levels. at the c.h.a, we can only urge  them to take the bold step. we know there is paucity of funds, but if they do not implement these programs, how will the support come? opportunities only meet preparation” He said.

Jibril, an ex-international handball player lamented the inability of the Golden Arrows to qualify for the ongoing international handball federation men’s world cup in  poland and sweden.

We cannot be doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. Stakeholders in nigeria must take their own destinies right in their own hands. We should not be left behind in the scheme of things “  He said.

He therefore urged the leadership of the handball federation of nigeria to roll out their plans for the year early enough for optimal results.

APC seeks disqualification of PDP’s Presidential Candidate

0

Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress, APC says it will take steps in the next few days to seek the disqualification of the Presidential Candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar in court.

The Director, Public Affairs and Chief Spokesperson of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Mr Festus Keyamo stated this at a press briefing at the campaign headquarters in Abuja.

The APC is seeking disqualification of Atiku based on the alleged corruption allegation regarding “Special Purpose Vehicle” against him by one of his former aides Michael Achimugu.

Recall that a few days ago Mr. Achimugu released a viral audio where Atiku who was a former Vice-President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 was heard narrating how he took charge of setting up onshore shell businesses called “Special Purpose Vehicle ” SPV to serve as a conduit for syphoning significant sums from public works contracts for himself and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The APC also called on the PDP Presidential Candidate to apologise to Nigerians and immediately step down from the presidential race.

“In the light of these very grave revelations, we call on Atiku Abubakar to immediately tender an unreserved apology to the Nigerian people and step down from the presidential race forthwith, whilst handing himself over to law enforcement agencies.

“We shall clearly take steps in the next few days to initiate a judicial process seeking the outright disqualification of Atiku Abubakar from the race based on these facts” Keyamo said.

The party urged law enforcement agencies to investigate one of the shell accounts mentioned in the audio conversation – Marine Float and recover all monies in that account.

The APC also called on law enforcement and anti-graft agencies to abide by the laws of a constitutional democracy and investigate the PDP Presidential Candidate.

“We understand that the law enforcement agencies may be reluctant to act simply because of the perception of persecution of a presidential candidate that this may evoke. However facts are scared” APC said.

Nigeria’s governing party further accused the media of “conspiratorial” silence regarding the issue adding that the media “zealously feasted” on drug deal allegations leveled at its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu but however stayed silent about over a grave issue such as this.

“We are disillusioned but not surprised at the conspiratorial silence of a section of the media over this grave issue of National importance. Even after seeing court processes in form of a sworn affidavit, we observed an embarrassing silence yet from a section of the media. We have consistently made our case against the unethical and partisan antics of some media houses and this development vindicates us” the party said.

They further appealed to law enforcement to protect the whistle blower Michael Achimugu.

Among the documents presented by the APC to journalists were copies of court affidavit by Mr. Achimugu, the transcribed version of the audio conversation between Atiku and Achimugu as well as Achimugu’s appointment letter as Director Media to Atiku Support Organisation.

Italy’s most-wanted mafia arrested

0

Italy’s most-wanted mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro has been arrested in Sicily after 30 years on the run.

State media reported that Denaro, who was the boss of the notorious Cosa Nostra mafia, was detained in a private clinic in Sicily’s capital Palermo where he was receiving treatment before he was taken to a secret location by the Carabinieri, Italy’s Armed forces who were in their hundreds ready to arrest Denaro.

A video circulated by Italian media shows people standing in the street and applauding the Italian police as Messina Denaro is led away.

Denaro was tried and sentenced to life in jail in absentia in 2002 over numerous murders. These include the 1992 killing of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the deadly 1993 bomb attacks in Milan, Florence, and Rome, and the kidnapping, torture, and killing of the 11-year-old son of a mafioso turned state witness.

The mafia boss also oversaw racketeering, illegal waste dumping, money laundering, and drug trafficking for the powerful Cosa Nostra organised crime syndicate. He was reportedly the protege of Totò Riina, the head of the Corleone clan, who was arrested in 1993 after 23 years on the run.

Although he had been a fugitive since 1993, he was thought to be issuing orders to his subordinates from various secret locations. Over the decades, Italian investigators often came close to catching Messina Denaro by monitoring those closest to him. This resulted in the arrest of his sister Patrizia and several other of his associates in 2013. Police also seized valuable businesses linked to Messina Denaro, leaving him increasingly isolated.

However, few photos of Messina Denaro existed, and police had to rely on digital composites to reconstruct his appearance decades after he went on the run. A recording of his voice was not released until 2021.

Tributes to the work of the armed forces are pouring in from across the political spectrum. Gian Carlo Caselli, a judge, and former prosecutor general said that the arrest of Messina Denaro is an “exceptional… simply historical event that might lead to significant developments in the ongoing inquiries into the 1993 bomb attacks that killed ten people across Italy.”

Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni thanked the armed forces for detaining the most crucial member of the mafia criminal group. He said, “This is a great victory for the state.”

Nigeria’s youths will explore new frontiers in technology- VP Osinbajo

0

Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo says there are more exciting new frontiers to be explored and harnessed by Nigeria’s talented and enterprising young entrepreneurs with  the rapid growth of innovation and technology recorded over the years globally.

Prof Osinbajo Yemi Osinbajo expressed this view in a pre-recorded speech at a weekend ceremony in Lagos to mark the 20th anniversary of Inter-switch, a leading fintech company in Nigeria and Africa.

“As innovation and technology open exciting new frontiers in medicine and healthcare, we can be rest assured that Nigeria will not lag behind.

Innovative disruptions thrive on natural and human occasioned-gaps within the system,” the VP said that many of such are in Africa.

This is why our continent is undoubtedly the next and possibly the last frontier.

“All across the continent, there are yawning gaps waiting to be plugged by innovative ideas and entrepreneurial efforts. It is exciting to see how sprightly young people, particularly, are rising to the challenge and the accelerated pace of creative disruptions in their wake,” he added.

Speaking further on the incredible talents and potential of Nigeria and Africa’s young people to drive socioeconomic growth, the VP stated that, “in 2021 alone, African tech startups raised over $4billion in funding, with over 564 startups across the continent solving critical problems in almost every sector.

“Within the next two decades Africa’s workforce will be the largest in the world. They are skilled and they are coming. As a result, more innovative disruptors will yet emerge to plug more of these gaps.”

Prof. Osinbajo further said the Buhari Administration will continue to provide the enabling environment for young entrepreneurs and businesses to thrive.

“Our responsibility as a government has been to meet them halfway, and perhaps outpace them with corresponding creativity in the provision of forward-thinking regulatory frameworks and adequate infrastructure. I can assure you that no effort is being spared in this regard.

“Nevertheless, there is still so much to be done; and a lot of ground to cover. I have no doubt though that we are up to the task,” he emphasised.

The VP observed that “it is through innovative disruptions that humans have managed resolve their most complex challenges and stay ahead of the survival curve.

“Oftentimes, these ideas are championed by mavericks who find better, safer and more cost-effective ways for us to live, do business, and govern; slight tweaks that improve our overall experience, and complete overhauls that lead us into new paths altogether.”

On what he described as ‘two rigorous decades of accelerated change,’ since Inter-switch was founded 20 years ago, Prof. Osinbajo noted that it was “incredible that what began as a novel idea to facilitate seamless payments across Africa, has in barely two decades become something of an icon of technology and innovation literally pioneering Africa’s ongoing Fintech revolution.”

The Vice President described Inter-switch “as a leading company at the forefront of agency banking and financial inclusion in Nigeria, which also operates the largest and fastest growing private sector-led domestic card scheme in the world.”

He further noted, “It is therefore a testament to the quality of the talent and courage of the founders of Inter-switch that they saw the future clearly and predicted the potential of a nascent technology for scale and application.”

Situating Inter-switch further in the innovative disruption that has since transformed Nigeria’s fintech space, Prof. Osinbajo recalled that “in 2002, only 569 million people were connected to the Internet worldwide. Nigeria as a whole had less than 200,000 people with Internet access. In fact, PayPal, one of the pioneering electronic payment companies in the internet age, was barely four years old at the time.”

Since then, Africa’s domestic e-payments market has grown by 20% annually in the last two years and is projected to hit around $40 billion in 2025, the Vice President said.

“It is estimated that around half of all future digital payments will come from Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Ghana, and Kenya; with Nigeria experiencing the fastest growth at 35% per year. A lot of this is, of course, owed to the trailblazing efforts of Inter-switch. Your rapid expansion, already serving customers in over 23 African Markets, is an ample demonstration of growing vitality.”

Aside from its remarkable feats in the fintech industry, the Vice President also commended the Inter-switch group team, including the Chair of its board of directors, Sir Kenneth Olisa; founder and group managing director, Mr. Mitchelle Elegbe, for its leadership and dynamism, as well as its contributions to some social initiatives in the country.

Prof. Osinbajo also hoped that the firm’s 20th anniversary celebration of its corporate existence “will serve as an inspiration to the millions of young entrepreneurs across the continent who are throwing their hats in the ring to build better nations and a stronger continent.”
