Governor Soludo gave the commendation during the Wreath Laying Ceremony to commemorate the 2023 Armed Forces Day at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, the state capital.

The Governor described the day as an opportunity for sober reflection.

“Today calls for sober reflection as we remember and celebrate our fallen heroes in the Army, the Navy, Air Force, the police and secret service who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of our collective liberties and rights as well as those of the communities around the world through the various peace keeping missions that the Nigerian Armed forces have embarked upon, over the years. May their great souls continue to rest in peace.

“We also continue to stand in solidarity with the spouses and family members of the fallen heroes. As a people, the nation will never forget.

“We can never as a people take for granted, the great sacrifices of our fallen heroes. In dying for us to live, the heroes are etched forever on the pages of our history.

“The 2023 Armed forces remembrance Day celebration, kicked off in earnest on Friday, December 9, 2022 with the launching of the Armed forces remembrance Day emblem.

“Following the launch of the emblem, there was the church service last Sunday, January 8 2023 at St Faith Cathedral, Awka and Jumat prayers on January 13 at Central Mosque, Awka.

Today’s wreath laying and parade ceremony should serve as the climax of the patriotic commemoration of the heroism of our beautiful forces who stood up to be counted towards the successful completion of the Nigerian Civil war and all the other engagements that the armed forces have embarked upon in defence of our country and our liberties.

“When our Country was a British colony, the remembrance Day was on November 11 as Puppy day in honour of the end of the first world war, but the end of the Nigeria Biafra war has accounted for the change of date to 15th of January and I hope we all remember this.

“Our esteemed Armed Forces deserves continued commendation for their dogged fight against terrorism, insurgency and armed banditry all over the country.

“It is so reassuring and praise worthy that our men and women of the forces are not resting on their oars but instead extending their worthy legacies of the veterans”, Governor Soludo stressed.

“The veterans we celebrate today have left a solid legacy for the Nigerian Armed forces of the present. They continue to guarantee internal peace such as especially, we remember the sacrifices of this armed forces in our dear state, Anambra, helping to liberate, as we know, the eight local governments that were completely taken captive before our government was sworn in and helping to maintain security around the entire state.

“At this moment let me on behalf of the good people of Anambra State pay special tribute to all those who lost their lives in the determined fight to eliminate criminality in our dear state. May their souls rest in peace”, the Governor prayed again.

“Let me also commend the gallantry, professionalism and massive support of all the security agencies operating in the state. Your immense sacrifice and devotion will forever be treasured by the great people of Anambra state.

“To the criminals in Anambra State and the Country, especially a few miscreants terrorising parts of Ihiala LGA in particular, we use this moment to assure you that light and darkness can never coexist. You will never break our will as we are determined to take back our state fully”, the Governor warned.

“Our people are determined and will surely have their deserved security, peace and progress. On this account, we shall continue to celebrate our heroic men and women of the armed forces and all the security agencies operating in the state. We will never forget our esteemed ex servicemen.

Europe, G7, Others, to impose cap on Russia’s Oil Exports

From February 5, the European Union, the G-7 and its allies will attempt to impose a cap on the price of Russia’s fuel exports — the latest punishment for its invasion of Ukraine.

That will coincide with an EU prohibition on almost all imports of Russian oil products.

Similar measures are already in place on the country’s crude shipments, but it is the cap and ban on refined fuels — and in particular diesel — that has some oil-market watchers concerned about the potential for price spikes.

This, an unprecedented chunk of the global diesel market, the workhorse fuel of the global economy, is just weeks away from being subject to aggressive sanctions.

Prior to its invasion of Ukraine, Russia was Europe’s largest external supplier of the fuel and the continent has continued to buy in big volumes right up to the cutoff.

As a result, the sanctions are likely to see a great rerouting of global diesel flows — aided by Russia’s new crude buyers sending fuel back to Europe.

However, in the short-term, there’s a risk of higher prices.

The European Union will have to replace about 600,000 barrels a day of diesel imports, and Russia will need to find new buyers for those supplies, store the fuel on ships, or cut production at its refineries.

Shipments into the EU from the US and India have already been on the rise as they produce more than they consume, allowing them to export their surfeit.

China is also expected to send more of the fuel into its nearby markets, indirectly pushing cargoes from other suppliers toward Europe.

Crude prices slid after sanctions on Russia appeared to reroute exports, rather than cut them.

Ghana seeks debt treatment under G20 Common Framework- IMF

0

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed that Ghana has sought debt treatment under the Common Framework platform supported by the Group of 20 major economies.

Ghana requested on Tuesday to restructure its bilateral debt under the Common Framework platform supported by the G20, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The crisis-hit nation becomes the fourth country to apply to the G20 initiative launched in 2020 and designed to streamline debt restructuring efforts in the wake of poorer countries buckling under the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ghana just became the fourth country to seek treatment under the Common Framework, sending a signal that it is seen as an important pathway for debt resolution,” Georgieva said in a blog.

Ghana’s debt restructuring under the Common Framework aims to include non-Paris club members, such as China in debt relief talks.

China is Ghana’s biggest bilateral creditor with $1.7 billion of debt, while the country owes $1.9 billion to Paris club members, according to data from the International Institute of Finance (IIF).

Ghana, which secured a $3 billion staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in mid-December, has been hesitating on this request due to the long delays faced by other countries using the process.

The Common Framework, designed to allow for speedy debt restructuring, has been widely criticised for its glacial progress.

Chad, Ethiopia and Zambia signed up in early 2021, while Chad secured a deal with creditors in November, Zambia is still locked in talks. Ethiopia’s progress was held up by civil war.

Lagos Chamber of Commerce Projects more Investments in Real Estate Sector

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed optimism that the construction and real estate sector would respond positively to a rise in investment from people wishing to store value through the sector.

The chamber disclosed this in a statement signed by its Director-General, Dr Chinyere Almona.

She noted that the last quarter of 2022 may have witnessed huge investment in this sector that would transmit into real growth in the first quarter of 2023.

Also Almona added that the coming onstream of Ajaokuta Steel Company would support solid growth in the construction sector.

The recently approved access to pension funds for mortgage policies can have a positive effect on the real estate sector as more people are able to afford a mortgage to purchase houses. Some of these innovative financing options may support robust growth in connected sectors.

“This, again, calls for best practice regulation by the government to create an enabling environment where private sector operations can thrive. The windfall from the electioneering campaigns by some actors may also find their way into the real estate sector,” the statement observed.

The chamber projected that the sector can contribute a higher rate than the 5.2 percent added to the country’s Gross Domestic Product in Q3 2022.
